Siobhan Caitlin finally put in an appearance on Friday 16th July, at 11.42 am, giving me the homebirth I so wanted. I had been to the mw on Thursday, and she had performed a sweep. telling me (much to my disgust) that it was unlikely to work as my cervix was unfavourable. Later in the evening I had a show, and some period type pains, but as I had been having them on and off for about 3 weeks I thought it was another false alarm. I went to bed, and woke at 2am on Friday morning with regular contractions every 15 minutes, so went to have a bath to see if it would ease. It seemed to have the opposite effect, and when I got out they were every 5 minutes and lasting 45 seconds. I woke DH and he called the mw at 5am, with me not being able to speak to her as the contractions were so strong. When she arrived, she called the student mw who wanted to be there, and wouldn't examine me until she arrived as she knew it might spped things up as soon as she did. When she arrived at the house, I was found to be 3cms dilated, and the contractions were coming thick and fast; I was on my knees over the birhing ball, and nothing would have got me off it! LOL. I was determined to avoid gas and air though for as long as I could, but then started vomiting with every contraction (this happened with my previous 2 also) and as I hadn't eaten since the previous evening this added to the pain a lot, so I asked for gas and air. To cut a long story short, over the next few hours, 2 more mw arrived and I went through 5 canisters of gas and air (in all fairness 2 of them were almost empty to start with). I asked for my waters to be broken as the baby was getting no closer to delivery, and when they did this there was meconium staining which alarmed them as I was at home. At 11.10 am they picked up the phone to call an ambulance, at 11.12am I felt the baby 'turn a corner' and after 30 minutes pushing, our beautiful baby was born, right there on the living room floor. The children were fantastic, flitting in and out of the room but always respectful of what was going on and they came in while Siobhan was still attached to the cord, and they heard her take her first cry. It was a magical moment. The midwives helped me upstairs, where Mummy and baby had a bath together, and then the mws got my bed ready with cushions and pillows and settled us into bed, where I fed her for the first time. I got away with one small tear and no stitches, and recovery has been rapid; I walked the children to school with the pushchair on Monday and have never felt better. We are all besotted with her, and I'm sure there will be a very special bond between the children and Siobhan, due to them being there at her birth. Just can't keep the smile off my face!
