Any recommendations for birth announcement cards - cheap and quick

Just getting prepared for when our baby comes. If it comes on time then we will have a week from birth until last posting date for Christmas, and would love to include arrivals cards in our Christmas cards - any suggestions for cheap and quick places where we can get them done - just a photo on one side and the name and key details on the back is fine.

We did ours with vistaprint. You will have to google... They were excellent!

Do you have a printer at home?

What you can do is:

• get some A5 white or cream card
  
• take The Picture of DC, and using whatever photo software you have, turn it upside down
  
• set up an A5 sized document in Word or whatever equivalent you are using.
  
• insert the photo at the top of the page, and centre it.
  
• Type in name, date, stats (weight, etc.)
  
• print those all off.
  
• fold them in half.
  
• BIRTH CARDS, with no need to wait for a printer.
  

If you want to do the stats inside the card, just make sure you

• use the other side of the card from the picture
  
• scroll down to the BOTTOM HALF of the page (so that the writing appears when you flip open the card)
  
• then type out the stats and centre them
  
• print
  

If you are really in a hurry and under budgetary constraints, this is probably the way to go. However, I would recommend setting up the template before baby is born, and then letting the less-sleep-depreived partner do the printing!

Sorry, it does sound complicated, doesn't it?!

There are plenty of online print services, though, and it is worth thinking about that, because that could save you the second round of cards.

With a new baby, it's best to adopt a "working smart" way of life - everything thought out while you are trapped feeding and executed when you have your free moments.

Sorry if this sounds patronising, but it's important to remember that short tasks are the only thing you will achieve in your broken-up day. Yes, you will have a "lot of time" "doing nothing", but that "doing nothing" is broken up into about 20-minute intervals. That is something I didn't realise before having a baby., and is something DHs and DPs have great difficulty understanding for years unless you spell it out like that!

Hello - good memory. Things are good - am still dubious about people who say they are in love with the baby they have never met when it is just a few cells in their tummy though (though have no doubt we will love ours when we meet it properly!) Hope all well with you?

Are you sure people won't wait 4 days, or until the Christmas post gets there? I have never had a birth card for loads of people, and got cards from others as much as a month after the baby was born.

If it starts to become a hassle, please don't get fixated on it. Get on with resting and bonding with your baby!

No,if you actually look on ebay you will find lots of people who print birth announcements fairly cheaply and all you have to do is send them the wording and a picture. I usually use them for DS's party invites. Just checked and the cheapest are £2.20 for 6, the most expensive are £12 for 20.

I sympathise about lack of interest, though. It drives me mad how complacent native English speakers in their belief that "Everyone speaks English." They're just trapping themselves, and will be taken advantage of! Ooh, you could have a lesson entitled La Grande Escroquerie, and "catch them out" with swindles and "small print" in French - to prove how vulnerable they will be if they don't learn something!

BTW, have I got (present perfect) the right end of the stick about teaching?

We used Snapfish. They were really good, and quite reasonable too.

Oh yes, why woud we want to learn French/Spanish/German when they ball speak English in Benidorm? I work in the borough with the second lowest uptake of MFL in the UK. Then again, many of them struggle with English despite being native speakers!

Ah, the native speaker problem. John Humphreys made a very compelling argument for teaching decent English in schools: that people who can't speak the "standard" are disadvantaged throughout life, particularly in any dealings with authority (doctors, the law, etc.), because in being illiterate, they will seem like pushovers.

A friend had an excellent receptionist who spoke poor English although it was her native tongue. He just didn't want grammar that poor to be the first impression given of his company.

So what did he do with/to the receptionist?

Fortunately, she found a job elsewhere. I correct the English of my students, even when they complain that they "don't want to talk posh. I explain that people will, like it or not, judge you by your level of spoken English and that accent is fine, poor grammar is not.
