Just sitting here on my own, DP gone to hospital, SIL phoned about 3am to say MIL has been rushed into hospital and she would call back when she had more news, she phoned back 20 mins later and said MIL had died.

I cannot believe it, DP is gone and I'm just in shock, tomorrow is his birthday, day after DD3's 1st, he was on holiday we were going to have such a lovely fun filled week of parties and then a family BBQ on Sunday which MIL was really looking forward to, she was only 61 and fit and healthy.

What do I tell the DCs although we lived an hour away they dote on her, they are going to be devastated?

Hi Sweetkitty - am up and didn't want your post to go unanswered. You poor thing. If at all possible I'd wait for your DP to get back from the hospital and tell the children together. Try to get some sleep if you possibly can x

My lovely MIL died last May - she was 67 but had been suffering from cancer for some time, tho' my children hadn't really picked up on that particularly. My ds was not quite 3 and dd only just 1. We sat my son down and said things along the lines of - Nanny was very sick and went to the hospital. The doctors gave her lots of medicines and tried to make her better but they couldn't. She stopped breathing and her heart stopped and she died. So we won't be able to see Nanny anymore but we have lots of photos we can always look at. My son got up and went and collected a photo of himself and Nanny and sat and looked at it for a long time. Both my dh and I were crying at this point. My son was a bit bemused by this but we explained that he'd probably see lots of the family upset as we were all very sad about Nanny dying. It was a horrible, sad time.
We didn't go down the 'Nanny's in heaven' line as we are not religious but that might help if you are.
My son (4 today) will now talk openly and lovingly about his Nanny and we have made up a memory box for both our dc. There are lots of photos of her. He still asks questions about her - why she died, how, where she is now...etc. We answer as honestly as we can.
Will be thinking of you .

I'm so sorry for your lose.
My Dad died suddenly 2yrs ago it was a total shock.Very fit and healthy man 62 when he died.

I told my 2 boys 4 and 7 at the time that Grandad had gone to heaven. I'm not sure they understood what it really meant. 2yrs on they still talk about him and the youngest still asks when he's coming back.

Much love to you all xxx
