How long til coroner deals with mum's case

DM died over a week ago in hospital. As she'd been there less than 24 hrs it has to go to the coroner. Her death was not unexpected - chest x-ray on hospital admission showed extensive pneumonia and she also had secondary brain cancer. She had seen a GP the evening before she died- hence the admission to A&E.

I can't register the death til I get the coroner's say-so. And I'm going away for 10 days on Wednesday. What happens if the ok comes through whilst I'm on holiday?

You can ring the Coroner's office on Monday morning. The coroner's assistant will be able to give you an idea of the time line.
TBH I am surprised this has been referred to the coroner, given what you have said.

In my personal experience it was 2 weeks before we were given permission to arrange the funeral, then it took a further 2 weeks to make all the arrangements. But that was because it was a bank holiday, then a PM had to be done, there was a police investigation too.

PP is incorrect, legally it had to be referred to the coroner. Hopefully as there is a clear cause it will be processed quickly. I would definitely call the coroners officer on Monday. They are usually very helpful. Good luck OP, I am sorry for your loss Flowers

We've just been through this. The coroner gave authorisation for the release if the body straight away however the inquest and registering of the death wasn't complete until a month after her death. The registrar had to have a nudge a week after the inquest. It all depends how full the coroner's heating calendar is - anything that is slightly questionable is referred for an inquest now due to the Harold Shiomsn murders.

My dad’s recent death got referred to the coroner, no PM required, but still took 10 days to turn around and get the death cert.

So sorry you’re going through this Flowers

We had a similar situation with my grandad. It took 2 weeks to release the body and a further 4 to organise the funeral. However this was in the winter which apparently is the most busy time!! Confused

When our dd died like your mum she passed away within 8hrs of being admitted to hospital. The coroner requested a pm which was carried out the day after she died, the pathologist confirmed cause of death and the coroner issued interim death certificates so that we could hold her funeral. We did not recieve the full certificate in order to register her death till 4 months later as the coroner was awaiting test results as to which strain of bacterial pneumonia caused her death. The coroners office were lovely and kept us up to date with how things were progressing. Once we recieved notification that we could register her it did take an additional 2 weeks to get an appointment with the registra.
