My boyfriend farther died last year and before he died he said he wanted half of his ashes to but put where he fished and the other half on his grandparents grave was there enquired about it and they said they would try rod the grave so his ashes would go in !! What does rod the grave mean as we've no idea.

Quite often scattering ashes in Churchyards is not permissible so maybe the rodding is to create a hole to pour the ashes into the grave?

Rodding is to check the depth of soil in a grave above the previous burials.
I assume the ashes are to be interred in a casket and therefore a fairly deep hole needs to be dug.
An alternative would be to inter the ashes loose or to scatter them on the grave if permitted.
