Supportive advice

my partner's mother has been in hospital for a week and after every test we discover another terrible diagnosis.

We're not married. I am trying to be supportive, but am struggling to know what I can do/what he would appreciate

He is totally absorbed at the hospital and does not keep me updated. He's naturally an introvert and bottles grief, fear, anger etc.

I am trying to let him know I'm here for him. What can I do to help without him asking (Because he won't ask).

Those of you who have been through this awful time, what was most helpful from your partners/friends. OR what was terrible?

If you live together, you taking the lead on shopping and cooking helps. I just wasn't able to think or plan- could still do the more mindless housework tasks.
