Bereavement

A book for a 4 year old to help her cope with grandfathers death?

FIL died yesterday. He had heart failure but had been told it was stabilised. DD (4) is devastated. She keeps breaking down in tears and I would like to find a book to help her. DS (5) seems ok but then will cry uncontrollably over a bumped knee or something.

I've not experienced death before. I don't know how to help anyone or what to say.

Goodbye Mog is a good, gentle book. Sorry for your loss.

I have heard good things about Water Bugs and Dragonflies.

Sorry for your loss. Xx

I've just bought Always and Forever for my 3 year old, it is lovely. The animals start out all sad when Fox dies and end up remembering all the good things and realising he's always there in their memories. Just right I think.

'Badger's Parting Gifts' was used in my son's reception class and sounds excellent from what he told me about it.

Another recommendation for Dragonflies and Waterbugs. It really helped my 4 yr old when my dad died.

Duck, Death and the Tulip by Wolf Erlbruch, Penelope Todd and Catherine Chidgey is beautiful and so is The Bear and the Wildcat. Both deal very directly with death and will help not only your child, but you too.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Have you heard about the charity Winston's Wish OP? They help children who've lost a parent or sibling but the advice on their website is really useful for anyone dealing with bereavement and children.
