I have a dilemma

3 months ago, my beloved grandmother died quite suddenly. She and my son, who is 4.5 years old now, was her only great-grandchild. They saw each other regularly and loved each other so much. Her death was such a blow to him and he misses her a lot.

Just after she died, we got a sofa from her flat. It's a perfectly good sofa, but I really don't like the pattern of the covers and it really doesn't 'go' with anything else. I'm finally getting round to organising this place (haven't been here very long) and I bought a throw to go over this sofa, which arrived in the post this morning.

When my son asked what it was I said it was something to go over the sofa because I didn't like the flowers. He said "But I like them" and I said "Wait, let me show you what it looks like" and put the throw on the sofa. He wouldn't sit back on it and looked really upset, and then I realised why. I took the throw off and called him over, picked him up onto my lap and cuddled him. I asked if he was upset because I was covering up my gran's cover and he said yes and started crying. We had a good long cry together and I apologised for not realising it would upset him so.

Later on this morning, when he was feeling better, I said what about he keep a scatter cushion (which is in the same fabric) from the sofa in his room and that can be his, and I get to cover the sofa. I explained that it would still be her sofa underneath. He agreed he should have the cushion and took it off to his room, but he's still fairly adamant the throw should stay off.

I'd leave it off. It's clearly too soon for your son, give him some time.
