Can anyone tell me when your babys could do this?

My 8mth old (7mths corrected) had his 9 mth check and he only 'grabs'. my 19mth old had his 9mth chk at 10mths and could do this.

she wasnt over worried, said to bring him back, but i am concerned.

Thanks,

Carly

Hi Carly

My dd (8.5 months) has just been referred to a paediatrician because she pokes at things with her first finger and keeps her thumbs tucked behind her fingers. If she makes a grip it is with her first finger, and her thumb bend over. I noticed it when she was 3 months old as her hands were always in fists. At the time, my GP was not concerned as she had good muscle tone. However, my HV and I have continued to monitor it and although she no longer keeps her hands it fists, she didn't manage to make a pincer grip at her 8 month check. I took her back to the GP and she has referred her.

It sounds as though your ds is opening his hands properly to grab, so it may just be a matter of time before he starts to use finger and thumb together. I'm not the best person to ask because my dd doesn't do it either, but just thought I would let you know my experience.

DS didn't pincer properly until he was 10 months

What are his gross motor skills like? My ds had very impressive pincer grip at an early age, but that was because he just sat on his backside until 14 months. Failed his 9mth check on gross motor skills.

Would just like to add that at 2 and a half he's careering around with the best of them! They're all different. don't worry.

gm skills are fine, grabs, rolls over, trying to crawl (but his 25lb bulk not allowing this yet!!)

i think he'll pick it up soon.

DD had hers at about 5 and a half months she was very early, which was a nightmare as it meant she picked up everything fluff on the carpet etc she also hates being spoon fed and wants to feed herself.

She was late at rolling and crawling though, she didn't roll from front to back etc till 7-8 months. She dragged her legs crawling style until about a month ago (she's 12.5 months now) and she's can take about 7-8 steps on her own now.

I think like everything else they all develop at different rates.
