Is it possible to parent well without a reward scheme?

I'm just wondering - I have tried to avoid it so far, but feel I'm floundering somewhat at the moment - resorting to ineffectual time outs or idle threats. I don't like the idea of offering material rewards for good behaviour - even small ones - and I already offer heaps of praise - but I don't have a cogent method and I feel I need one, so we all know where we are! any advice gladly heeded..........

I don't use one in general but have on occasion employed an action / reward scheme for a specific thing (like potty training)

but I never do idle threats .. what's the point if you're going to threaten something you should follow it through IMHO

I think you need more carrot than stick TBH.. whether that's praise or stickers or small present

I've never used one at home.
