My son suddenly has an opinion about his hair

DS (5) has suddenly become self concious about his appearance. He's decided he wants his hair either very short (no way) or longer than it is now (currently shortish but quite shaggy) "like those skateboarding boys".

I don't know why this has come as a shock to me but is has. I think it's that he suddenly seems to have an idea of 'fashion' and an image of what he wants to look like! Previously his opinions on matters of style have been limited to 'I like these trousers, they're comfy'. Apart from his t-shirt with the shark on which he loves with a passion.

I expected this from DD (only 2 but with vehemently expressed views on all my clothes and hers) but not DS and not at 5.

When did your child become aware of what's 'in' and 'out'?

my ds also 5 has started being much fussier about hair - and wants it gelled up. I think it is playing with older boys at school. we have agreed on a shorter cut (but not very short) and gel at weekends if he remembers. and he loves his 'little work shirt' - a blue and white striped one like daddy wears!

OK Liz you've scared me now with talk of gel.

No interest in gel (his school ban it hurrah) but we have had several requests for a haircut like Yu-Gi-Oh. I don't think so. Ds is five and would look a complete imbecile with a fancy haircut

Can someone enlighten me - what is Yu-Gi-Oh? It's always being mentioned and has passed us by so far. Marina - is your ds the same age as mine - I keep reading your posts and thinking 'oh yes, that's familiar!'

Yu-Gi-Oh is a vile cartoon/trading cards game combo designed to give parents a hard time.
It is Japanese, but really low-rent animation and dire plot/characterisation.
Bringing the cards into school is banned in many places as the potential for fleecing littler children of their rarer cards through enforced swaps is very high.
Yugi himself has supposedly trendy haircut that looks too much like "Atlantic Crossing" vintage Rod Stewart to me.
Tigermoth warned me about this infernal phenomenon and sure enough, ds is now a Yu-Gi-Oh expert in Year 1.
He is nearly six puddle. They are such funny little men at this age aren't they? Companionable little aliens a lot of the time. I look at ds sometimes and think, You What? All this stream of consciousness stuff about DarthVaderYuGiOhGurlsAreRubbishILoveFrankLampardWhat'sForTeaWhyCan'tIwatchSpiderman...
and yet still so loving and cuddly.

I think my ds(5) is a geek despite dressing him very fashionably he is blissfully unaware of how he look.

When he has his hair cut, the hairdresser always makes it really trendy by putting gel in which he hates & he walks straight out & flattens it. He has a wardrobe of (dare i say it) designer clothes but if asked to dress himself he will get out old trackie bottoms & a t-shirt too small!

He has no idea of what's in & what's out. Despite doing the things i do i dread the day he wants his say!

Thanks Marina - I'll look out for those in September! I do know a couple of boys (with achingly trendy mothers) who have a mullet - I thought they were being self-consciously ironic but now I see it may be of japanese origin!

Your post made me smile - Ds is just finishing reception and I do sometimes look at him and think 'who are you again?' It's such a big transition isn't it - out in the world on their won with all that brings.
