any tips on increasing attention span of a (just) 5yr old boy?

Any tips really appreciated on increasing the concentration/attention span of my friends DS. He was only 5 in June and has just gone into year 1 so big changes for him, though not a new teacher. He's an only child so wants mum's help/to be around a lot when at home she wants to encourage his independent play - not really sure how to help as we have 4 dc and so far they all fight play beautifully thanks
