Anyone else with DCs who were on ranitidine for reflux and it stopped working?

DD is 8 months and I have posted at length about her recent sleep problems here The last couple of weeks, though, she has been screaming for hours every evening and/or in the middle of the night, the way she hasn't since she had undiagnosed silent reflux. She's been on ranitidine for 5 months and we haven't seen any symptoms since - until now, possibly.

We thought it might be teething, recent cold and she certainly has sleep problems anyway, but the screaming is really weird. She's also been arching quite a lot in the last few days, which again she hadn't done since before the ranitidine. So I just wondered - does this ring any bells with anyone? Picking her up and cuddling her doesn't make any difference, she just carries on screaming - again, something she used to do with the reflux...

Thanks George - yes, we have. She's now on 2ml three times a day, which is quite high already I think. She's nearly 9kg now.

How recently was the dosage increased?

Have you started weaning yet? Have you recently introduced any new foods into her diet?

Um, well she started on 1ml at 3 months, moved to 1.5ml at about 5 months, now on 2ml at just turned 8 months, We began weaning on her 6-month birthday, but we're BLW and she was a bit of a slow starter. Didn't really swallow anything for the first 3-odd weeks, then began eating more and was just really getting going about 2 weeks ago when she got a bad cold and totally lost her appetite. It seems to have come back in the last few days, but her screaming has also got worse in the last week.

Is it possible she has allergies??? She's been BF (though not exclusively) continuously from birth, though, so surely if she did have allergies they'd have come through in the milk and the problem would have become apparent before now?

ds was on it for a couple of months and like you he was fine but then symptoms returned with a vengeance then he was prescribed something stronger, omeprazole, and he was on that until about 10 months

have you been referred to a specialist?

Thanks wezz. Then it is possible, I guess. I thought by 8 months she'd be getting better (more mature digestive system, more time upright because of sitting up, introduction of solids, etc), but maybe not. How old was your DS when he went onto omeprazole? We are going to the paeds outpatient clinic at the hospital next week, so I really hope they'll be able to shed some light.

She's not dairy intolerant is she?

As adults it's certain things that irritate reflux...for me it's cereal, weetabix especially.... could be the same for your DD.

Best of luckxx
