3 year old boy with hyper-sensitive hearing - is it normal?

My 3 year old seems to have really sensitive hearing. A loud bang will have him jumping into my arms like a baby monkey. Walking along the road with motor bikes passing, he has his hands over his ears.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is it a developmental phase?
Thanks,
Flora

Both my DCs were like that - especially the motor bike. My DS used to go for walks with his hands over his ears. I think now he has leant to drown out the noise of the outside world BY MAKING HIS OWN Seriously though, both seem to have adjusted to modern day life now (7 and 5).

Thank you Seeline.
I partly wondered if it had anything to do with him being a 'fussy'/'high need' baby - hard to settle, sensitive to any sort of stimulation? Would be interested to know if anyone else had babies like that who turned into hyper-sensitive children?
