Eye colour..was it what you expected?

My DH and I both have brown eyes, my DS's are blue (he's 2.4, so definitely their fixed colour now). His paternity is not in question, DH is definitely Dadddy (although my sis did ask, cheeky mare )...
So obviously a case of throwback genes...was wondering whether anyone else's DC's have different eye colour to their parents...

Yeah, dd has blue and me and dh both have green. She gets that from our parents, at least one of the grandparents from each side should have blue eyes to pass the gene on.

Yes - I have hazel eyes, dh has light blue, dd has dark brown 'hispanic' eyes, and the 2 DSs have grey eyes ringed with black.

I'd love to know how that all came about..

I have blue eyes, my sister has blue eyes and guess what my brother has blue eyes,

My mum is brown eyes and my dad is a darkish blue, I heard that brown is the dominant (not sure on spelling) gene, yet all blue, and both my brother and eyes colours change, and mainly mine are blue, with grey, and brown flecks in

Me and ex P are very dark haired and have brown eyes. DS has blue eyes and very fair hair. Thankfully he does look like his Dad so no need for blood tests .

that was meant to say both my brother and my eyes ...

Mine have green eyes like me.,Apparently quite unusual.Must be a dominant gene as runs in my family. They are both blondies like dp though even though I am really dark haired.

Ds1 has the most brilliant blue eyes, I have green and my ex has brown.
Ds2 also has blue but no where near as stunningly bright as Ds1, Dh has green eyes like me.

dh and I both have dark brown eyes, dark hair and olive skin,
so does ds2 but
ds1 who is nearly 10, has blond hair and pale blue eyes...
I can't tell you how many times his paternity has been questioned but it's in the 100's. It's so bloody cheeky and rude.. my parents both have light hair and blue eyes ffs

meant to say,... no, it definitely wasn't what I was expecting

I have brown eyes, DH has dark blue eyes (with a yellowish ring around the pupil).
DD has grey/green/hazel eyes and DS has brown with a kind of smattering of blue in them - and the yellow ring. In both cases, it's almost as if you mixed our two eye colours together.

I have blue eyes, my dad has blue eyes, but my mum has brown eyes so I guessed my DC would get either blue or brown eyes. DS has brown eyes.

Everyone has brown hair but my mum, me and my sister were fair haired as children so I imagined any of my DC would have blonde or brown hair. DS has dark blonde hair.

I have blue/green eyes
Dh has brilliant blue eyes

I always expected any dc to have blue eyes

Dd1 has hazel eyes
Dd2 has brilliant blue eyes
Dd3 has blue eyes but I suspect they're going blue/green like mine.

Oh, and dd1's eyes only turned from blue to green when she was around 1yo and only went hazel when she was around 3yo!! So your ds's eyes are not necessarily fixed at 2.4

I have dark brown eyes and Dh has blue/grey we both have dark hair

DS has my eyes and DD has blue/grey like DH

DD was also blonde but has got darker over the years and is now a mid brown

My sister has the mediterranean darks eyes like I have and both her dds have blue eyes like their dad.

I thinks its because although our dad was greek my mum has hazel eyes , so the brown isn't so dominant in us.

The gene for blue eyes is recessive so it can be carried by both parents even if they have brown eyes themselves. If they both pass their blue eye gene onto the child (i.e. the child gets 2 copies of the blue eye gene) then the child will have blue eyes.

That's why you'll find quite a few blue eyed children with brown eyed parents (although often with blue eyed grandparents/other relatives).

Bumperslucious · 19/07/2009 10:30

Yeah, it depends on grandparent eye colour too. Blue is recessive to brown so although you are most likely to have a brown eyed child statistically 1 in for would be blue eyed.

Try this link to predict baby eye colour.

OP; In simple terms blue eyes are recessive, which means if you have the genes for both brown and blue you will have brown eyes because brown is dominant, but, you can still pass on the gene for blue eyes. So, two brown eyed parents can have blue eyed children, but two blue eyed parents shouldn't be able to produce a brown eyed child.

Both my DD's have their Daddy's big blue eyes, I have got green/light brown eyes, not hazel, light brown in the middle with a distinct green ring around the outside, and I was secretly hoping one of them would inherit them, but neither of them have, so I guess my niece will have to pass them on, as she has them too.

Here's a wiki explanation.

Report
nappyaddict · 19/07/2009 12:36

So does that mean two blonde haired people can only produce a blonde haired child aswell?
