Is it odd that a 11mo old still can't sit??

Ds has been crawling for months and has recently accomplished pulling up to standing but I'm a bit worried because he still can't sit or pull himself into a sitting position on his bum. This seems to affect his balance as he's still very unsteady. So where my friend's baby of the same age falls from standing onto his bum, my ds falls and bangs his head.
I always thought babies learnt to sit before they crawled. Has anyone else's done it the other way round or should I contact my hv incase there's a problem?

Not sure but we have the other way round - my one year old has been sitting since 6m but can't crawl or pull himself up (or pull himself up to sitting either), though will stand happilly for ages against something if you put him on his feet. I took him to the GP a month or two ago who said keep an eye on it and bring him back if still no attempt to get around. He is doing a sort of bottom shuffle around now and will walk if you hold his hands so I am assuming all is fine and he will get there. I think it is probably worth taking him along just to set your mind at rest. I think nowadays it does vary a bit because of the fact that babies no longer sleep on their front so sometimes domn't crawl as a result. Maybe this is something that can affect sitting too? Mine also would fall back and hit his head rather than sitting down from standing.

My 8mo can't sit very well, but has been crawling well since 5 1/2mo. My DS was also a late sitter, but was crawling and pulling up well, eventually walking well at 12mo.

Have used the word "well" far too much! Can't be bothered to go back and change though.

Thanks Mtf. I did raise it at his last developmental check and the ped was meant to call him back so I might give them a ring to confirm as I haven't received any word. That's what makes me cringe - the amount of times he bangs his head a day. Atm he is sporting 2 bruises on the side of his face and looks like some sort of beaten child.

Thanks smallships. So he's not the only one to do things the wrong way round. I suppose if they learn to crawl first, they don't want to just sit as it's boring
