boobs at 10

my daughter has just turned 10 and wears a 30b bra. is this abnormal?
and is she likely to start her periods soon?

Definitely not abnormal.

Normal pubertal development in girls can begin any time from 8 to 14yrs.

The time scale from the start of breast development to menarche is usually around 2-3 years but may be less or more than this.

The timing of puberty is influenced by weight and body fat amongst many other factors.

I was 9 when I started my periods and it didn't negatively affect me at all.

I would agree with body weight/fat thing. At my school it was the 'bigger' girls who got periods first.

I was skinny as a rake and got mine at 14.

When girls start their periods rhey tend to grow very little after that in height so think about whether or ot she is likely to be at final adult height or not.

I was pretty much the same size as I am now when I was 9, I may have grown by max of another 2 inches and I actually might weigh a little bit less so I was a big 9 year old but I'm an average height slim woman now.

I grew quite a lot after my periods started, about 6 or 7 inches......

My dd is 10.2 and breast development is well underway. She will probably need a bra in another few months.

its not just boobs though, she has become hairy in various parts of her body, has hips and everything, just seems so young for all this.or are kids generally developing earlier these days?

It can be a shock when its early. My DD had pubes at 9 1/2 and started her periods at 11 and 2 months.

The disadvantage is that she stopped growing in height early and is 5ft 3 at 14. I'd say she stopped growing two years ago whereas the willowy girls shot past her in height and started periods around 13.

She is normal ydaft sod! Well, she's not 'normal'. Frankly she's a bit of a weirdo!

but her body developing is normal - some adults are her size (shorter even! ) and as others have said, it's more about height/weigh etc triggering it that chronological age.

btw - are you in at the weekend? I thought I might bring that lamb round.

And I knew I'd bring you to the dark side eventually......

Hi shivermetimbers, my DD is 10 and she's had little boobs growing and pubic hair for at least a year, and more recently hair under her arms. She is wearing little crop tops or 'pretend' bras most of the time now, mostly becuase she was getting embarrassed changing for PE at school.

It does seem very early, and I don't remember having any of that until well into secondary school.

There is the 7 stone theory, also IIRC one that periods start about a year after underarm hair appears, and another that suggests that as the general standard of living rises over the years girls are beginning puberty earlier (I guess the opposite of periods stopping if you are very underweight or malnourished).

I suppose the best thing is to be aware that periods may happen soon and prepare yourself and your DD for it. Usbourne do a good book 'what's happenning to me' that DD has read and she and I have read it together. It's a bit TMI in some places but I'd rather she knew enough to not be scared when her periods do start, and it has helped me explain it to her in a clearer, less scary way.

I remember having pubic hair at 8, my periods started when I was 11. My DD is 9 and complains about chest pain but hasn't got breasts yet,but she is very hormonal and her hair has started to get greasy. My 6 yo is hairy as a monkey, I suspect, like me, she will habve pubic hair at an earlier age than DD1.

Not necessarily. Dd started hers at 10, but has grown a lot since then. And she was very thin too, but is now (at 11) rounded. Still growing though. Didn't need bras until about a year after her periods had started.

I started my periods at 11 so not unheard of in those days, and I also grew quite a bit after that.

There is strong evidence that the hormonal changes at the time of ovulstion cause the growth plates in the long bones of the body to fuse. Hence when most girls start their periods they tend to grow very little unless the cycles that they are having are anovulatory or very irregular.

The typical pattern of pubertal development in girls is breast budding and growth spurt with further breast development then menarche. Just because this isn't what happened to your daughter does not mean that it is not typical.
