How do I get dd 10m to use a spoon?

As dd wont accept lumps on a spoon from me, how do I get her to eat bigger chunks of food from a spoon by feeding herself?

I always give her a sppon, but she throws it on the floor and gets stuck in with her hands.

let her eat with her hands. She's too young to be worrying about spoons.

Just let her use her hands. She'll use a spoon soon enough. Its really really difficult to use a spoon, think about all the different bits - getting it into the bowl, scooping action to get anything on it, lifting it without knocking it on side of bowl and knocking food off, getting it to mouth whilst keeping it absolutely horizontal.

Its very very difficult. dd1 (20 months) still uses fingers 50 % of the time. I don't think shes that unusual.

ds2 was one last week and he has just started grabbing the spoon and using it himself relatively successfully, but before this he would throw it on the floor.

I'd let her hold it when she's ready.

Its not worth a fight. Just be delighted that she is happy to feed herself at the moment. The rest will come.

My ds2 is 20 months is more than capable of using a spoon but chooses not to most of the time, he can also stab with a fork but again doesn't.

The only thing I draw the line at is throwing food but he eats mash, breakfast cereal including weetabix, shreddies etc, cottage pie, pasta, fish, all with his hands. I am just glad he eats.

I give him those pouch youghurts with the screw off lid so that he doesn't eat yoghurt with his hands!!

Meal times will just end up as a battle ground if you try to force the issue. A bib with arms is the answer and a laid back attitude.

She is a bit young to be using a spoon. Youcould try giving her a spoon to hold while you feed her, otherwise just let her use her hands.

DS2 just started to be interested in spoons at 10mo, DS1 still eating mostly with fingers (uses fork with constant reminders) at aged 3.
