At what age did you put your child into a 'top-bunk'?

Just about to get some bunkbeds for DS1, and wondering when he could potentially go into the top-bunk if we moved DS2 in with him, or if nanna comes to stay.

Anyone care to share their experiences?

My dd1 was almost four.

4, he was fine, even 3 would have been ok in one with good high sides

DD had a high sleeper from about 3/4, we only had the one room and needed to put the cot in with her so she had one of those ones that had space for a desk underneath.
She was perfectly fine with it, also DS is nearing three and has been in DD's top bunk (she prefers the bottom atm) a few times if he has had an accident in the night.

my dd went into the top bunk on her 3rd birthday and has been fine - no problems at all. Bunks these days seem to have nice high sides all round unlike the dangerous bunks of the 70's we slept in that just had a little arm bit.

DS1 went into a top bunk at 2.10 and has never fallen out. My biggest worry was him going up and down the ladder but we found some with a sloping ladder that he has no problem with (he's not very agile).

Fantastic - he's nearly 3 and a half now, so should be OK. We'll be sure to get some with high sides

Now for the thoughts about how on earth we'll get the two of them to sleep in the same room....... hmm

Fourish, I think . with high sides and a sloping ladder. I don't think I'd be happy to put a tiddler in the top bunk, just because getting out of bed for a wee in the middle of the night might be a bit challenging.

hey laura - we thought our 2 in same room wud b a nightmare but the bunk beds swung it. bought them some clip-on lights (going back to lidl when they come in next week, reserve supplies) and they think it's all fab. one likes to go to sleep in the light, the other in the dark so how different can u get?!

laura032004 Fri 21-Sep-07 22:22:35

hmmm - never thought about the middle of the night wee. Not an issue for us yet, as DS1 still wears a night nappy. How has this worked for other people?

Great idea for the lights - DS1 must have the light on all night. DS2 currently sleeps in the dark. If we switch DS1's light off, he will turn up in our room in the middle of the night. Leave it on, and we don't see him until morning. Hard choice wink
