Reading for toddlers

When should my 2yo be able to sit end concentrate with these type of books shown in photos? So far he doesn't but loves the that's not my... range of books but aren't those a bit babyish now?

My 22 month old has a lot of books like that and likes to me to read them to him and to look at them together, but he wouldn’t really sit by himself and look at them.

Mine sometimes looks at the pictures but often not interested

Are the usbourne that's not my....books too babyish for a 2yo do ppl think?

Is your child due to go to nursery/pre-school
at 3? They will be expected to sit and sing/listen to a story. If at the nearly 3 end your child might be one of those who listen when their teacher asks but not when a parent does.

You don't say which end of 2 your child is (just 2 and nearly 3 is very different) but at 2 my sons would only sit for a book they liked (they preferred non-fiction books) while my dd would sit and listen if she was in the mood (very important!) and the pictures were appealing. It might be worth noting that she was a much earlier talker than her brothers. She definitely preferred ones with rhyming and would have liked the brightly coloured illustrations of book 2 and 3 over 1.

At 2 my DD's absolute favourite was [[https://www.waterstones.com/book/you-choose/pippa-goodhart/nick-sharratt/9780552547086 You Choose!) which seems a bit more brightly coloured and with less text than the book you demonstrate.

DS was massively into Thomas books.

Agree with the pp saying that it's very hard to know if we don't know if he's just 2, 2.5 or almost 3.

Also agree that he will be expected to sit and listen if he starts pre-school or nursery, but they usually do that anyway.

I also don't think that the "That's not my" books are too young if they are happy to sit and look at them with you.

My DS went through a staff of not reading at 7 and I bought him the Beano, Football magazines and plonked the cereal box in front of him at breakfast. He kept reading and is expected to get good marks in his GCSEs this summer. I really don't think it makes much difference what you read as long as you read to them

When the library reopens, I would take them and let them choose a few books, if you don't do that already

I think he's fine and I really wouldn't be worried. There are probably some parent who would tell you their LO was easing War and Peace at 28 months but most will be content with a brightly coloured book, with few words and being snuggled up to you

Ok thanks. To be fair I don't think my nephew ever wanted to read at all until he was at nursery age or older. I worry so much about my son. Everyone says he's doing great but he's not saying clear words just babbling lots and experimenting with different letter sounds

If you are worried about his speech, it might be worth speaking to your HV or doing one of these progress checkers

My kids at that age only sat to eat.
He might prefer some music over a book if he's like my kids?

If you're worried about speech then I think it's worth discussing with an hv whether a hearing or vision test is in order. The referral might not be for a while but based on your description he might not need it and you can always cancel if things sort themselves out.

He does like music deffo

I'm in talks with a speech therapist and she's giving me tips but no joy yet
