Baby staring at one hand

Hi everyone

I was hoping that someone out there would be able to tell me if this is ‘normal’ as I am a FTM and so very worried!

My LO is 10 weeks old and enjoys staring at his hand. Thing is, he only seems interested in this one hand. He can move the other one (rubs his face with it, grabs my fingers, can hold it up, wave it around, etc) but he doesn’t look at it or try to grab like he does with the other. He does occasionally look at it but not for long.

He can lift his head, look around etc and hold himself up on the floor/tummy time

Will this come in time or should I get him checked out?

Thank you in advance!

He's fine. Perfectly normal.

Hands are pretty fascinating if you're brand new to the world!

Thank you for replying!

It’s more the focus on one hand that’s worrying me

I'm pretty sure that there is no developmental disorder or illness of any kind that starts with being more interested in one hand than the other!

Babies are just weird! Grin There will be a million more things like this.

But do give your HV a call if it will put your mind at rest.

Thank you!

When you put it like that, it does sound a bit loopy! 😂😂😂

Perfectly normal and spot on developmentally. They learn to focus and discover hands around ten weeks. It’s a precursor to hand eye coordination. You can encourage them by squeaking or shaking a toy for them to practice reaching for.
One hand is usually dominant.

Absolutely normal. At that age most of the pictures I have on my phone are of my son staring at his hand Grin He’s nearly 2 now and doing fine.

Our 5 month old is fascinated by his feet at the moment.
Probably as the weather is on the up so his legs are a bit more on show.

He'll try and eat them when he's in the bath.

Honestly don't worry, if you worry too much about all the odd things they do you'll miss the first year.
Congratulations also 🙂

Thank you all so much for your kind responses ❤️

@Gobbycop that is so sweet about him tying to eat his feet! 😂 He sounds adorable!

You guys are right about not wasting the first year worrying! I will do my best 😊

They're fascinating little people haha.

You're doing a great job, nothing wrong with worrying a little. Keeps you on your toes 😂

I'm a first time dad at 43 years old and I have a tendency to worry.
You've just got to go with it.

Hiya ! Same thing is happening with my 10 week old son so I was wondering what happened with yours now that he must be around 3 years old 😅

Hiya! Yeah, he’s fine 😊 I have continued to be a worry wart and he has continued to grow into an amazing person…..who uses both hands to cause complete chaos 😆 Congratulations on your little one!
