Horrendous colic

Hi, I need some advice! My son is 6 weeks old and he seems to be suffering with HORRIFIC colic! I've tried infacol and gripe water. Anything I use seems to give him relief for about 2 days then it seems to be back with a vengeance! He's suffering reflux aswell apparently but it's all just guessing games from the doctor as no one will see him due to the pandemic! He's been on baby gaviscon which constipated him so he was put on to carobel milk thickener (1 scoop every feed) and his wind seems so much worse and is explosive pooping once or twice a day it's like a thick mustard paste! He cries out the most soul shattering cry and is absolutely inconsolable! He had about an hour and a half sleep during the day yesterday because he strains like he's trying to push wind out and just can not settled! I'm at my wits end any advice will be appreciated so much!

Have you tried winding him every 30 mils or so? Dr Browns bottles really help with wind too. My son had terrible wind at that age, reflux too. Giving a smaller dose of gaviscon helped with constipation, infacol made his reflux so bad he screamed too & gave him explosive up the back poos. What worked for us was a smaller dose gaviscon, winding every 30mil, holding him upright on my chest for 30 mins after a feed, tummy massage & bicicling his legs to get bottom wind out. They grow out of it. At 12 weeks or so he started to move around to get wind up himself.

I wind him every oz, sometimes he won't give anything up and I'm worried I'm going to hurt his little back all the constant winding, but I do wind. I bought some dr brown bottles, couldn't wait to use them and the first time I tried the thickener blocked up the teat Sad so had to go back to TT bottles for now. The thickener is working with his reflux but definitely causing more wind. I also bicycle his legs but never ever seems to release any wind. The one thing that seems to work for that is a warm heat pad on his stomach

Oh, he's also having major explosive poos right up his back! They smell worse than ever too.

The explosive poos stopped for us when we stopped using infacol. My HV said it can have that affect on young babies.

Google tiger in the tree winding method, no back rubbing involved. Belly down on your thighs too and tummy time help get wind moving.

Agree with trying the Tiger in the Tree. It's also worth trying Dentinox in the bottle. Can I ask which formula you are using?

Has the GP talked to you about the possibility of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) too?

I have the exact same problem. My baby is 10 weeks old and has cows milk allergy and reflux. I thought he'd grow out of it by now but it's worse than ever. Gaviscon and omprezole not doing a lot. Might try gripe water?

There is a book that dedicated an entire chapter to the importance of winding and it's well worth learning how to do it properly.

They say the stomach is like a toy maze you get in a party bag and the wind is like several balls you have to get back "home". You need to wind in several directions, don't assume the first burp is the only burp. Be vigilant with the winding.

Colic is a pain and is frustrating but it does pass.

Consider a chiropractor.

Preferably mctimoney that has had additional paediatric training.

Have you considered a cows milk protien allergy. Its quite common.

My DS suffered from bad colic and it’s so miserable so I’m feeling for you right nowFlowers
We had the same issue as infacol only worked for a week or two at most. We then tried colief drops which you add to the milk but it can be time consuming as you have to add them for around 30 mins before you give the feed etc so getting the time right is a pain. We actually ended up switching from aptamil to hipp organic formula at this point as DS would be constipated for days and then let out an explosion so after some recommendations we gave this a go which definitely helped with the poo aspect. Still had horrendous colic however but gripe water and carobel kept it relatively manageable. Be prepared for people to tell you to just wait it out etc. That was one of the worst things someone could have told me because when your in that moment 24/7 it’s horrendous.
With the carobel you do have to go up a teat size sometime and I’m not sure how they work with the dr browns bottles but we used it with mam and just went a size up or didn’t add quite as much thickener. We tried gaviscon but that just made him constipated so gave up on that one quickly.
Just keep pushing the GP for more investigations etc as people have said possible cows milk allergy as the poo situation isn’t normal.
Hope you find some help I really feel for you Flowers
