My 4 month old doesn't coo or make any sound

Hi everyone, I'm a really concerned first time mum and I'd like to know if anyone can help me or had a similar experince.
My baby is nearly 4 and a half months old and he barely coos. He doesn't make any sound. I try to stimulate him as much as I can I can see he tries to do some sounds he open his mouth but all he does is grunting or coughing. Nothing is coming out of his mouth. He is not able to do any vowel sounds. i noticed he doesn't interact much he is always quite withdrown and doesn't smile much either. I feel he hasn't made any progress in his social smiling and interaction since he was 2 months old.
I feel absolutely devasted seeing other babies younger than him smiling and laughing and doing all the lovely sounds and giggles and my child is completely mute.
Has anyone had a similar experience.
Thank you very much I hope I can be reassured.

Every child is different. It's perfectly natural for you to look at babies the same age as your son and wonder why they are (what you believe to be) more advanced. He's his own little person and will develop at his own pace. Speak to your health visitor or GP if you need reassurance, however you sound like a lovely attentive mum so as long as he is content and thriving, try not to worry.
