What age to test?

Hi, I'm getting different views. Some say to test early and some say to wait till 7. My boys is 4 and he is fine on 1-2-1 sessions but in a class sessions he gets lost. He's in EY1 and he needs adult support to complete carousel activities before he returns to what he wants to do. The school want to get him tested but I'm not sure. The waiting will be long any way. He's getting more adult help at school. He's very academic and doing well. So he's learning and making progress but I feel the school is pushing for this but for what. At home, he's no bother. I know carousel activities are becoming more outdated and if he was doing 'in the moment planning' there would be be as many problems. I'm just finding it all frustrating and feel the teacher needs to step up more with her management. Thank you in advance for your help!

They're not sure for what. What to do know why he has difficult in whole class settings rather than 1-2-1.

The school wants to test him but they do know for what?... that sounds really odd. That might mean that they want to bring a child psychiatrist to observe him in the classroom, but even then, they surely must have an idea of their concerns and likely they have not shared them with you. Why does he struggle in a group environment vs 1-2-1? is he anxious? social communication problems? unable to follow instructions or follow the games? (i.e. in those examples they would likely have autism concerns), hyperactivity, unable to focus, forgetful, etc, (i.e. in those examples they would likely have ADHD concerns even though he is too young to be tested for that), etc. They must surely have an idea, I cannot believe that they do not :)

Thank you for answering, I really appreciate. They want to know why he can complete tasks and get things done in a 1-2-1 with the teacher but then in a whole class setting he seems to be lost. They just said to us would you be against further assessment. We live in Europe and he goes to a private school. We with us at home we have no issues or problems. So I can't help but think: a) he's over whelmed in the class; b) teacher is not checking with him that he understand tasks or expectations; and c) there's 24 in the classroom and it's quite loud with very set times outside — very old school.

It could be adhd or speech developement. We're looking at taking him to a speech and language therapist but I feel he's too young to really get a proper assessment done. So many kids have traits and my research tells me most testing is better at 7/8.

I see, it might be a little different here in the UK - however, I do not think he is too young. Here in the UK they start assessing children for development delays from 18 months old and speech therapy tends to start at 2 years old (ADHD is the only one that they tend to leave until after 5 years old).
