You mean that 5yo ds was acting like Damien?

Did he set that big black dog on you? Push you over the balcony? Was your mother a jackal?

We are just back from 2 weeks with 6 yr old DS and all we seemed to do was tell him off for the first few days. It settled down though and we were all fine by the last 3/4 days.

I started all positive with him but when he decided to screeched continuously in my face in the middle of the bar and then spit in my face I finally lost it. And it continued from there. I have never been so glad to get home in my life.

He spat in your face?

What triggered that little episode?

Report
popsycal · 25/08/2007 14:16

He wanted a wee but I had to wait til my mum got back from the bar as I had everyones' bags, buggies, cameras, purses, children, etc.

Too many late nights and too much rubbish contributed to it all no doubt, but inexcusable.

He's obviously picked up the spitting from school, but you're right. There is naughty five year old behaviour, and then there's spitting at your mother.

Hmm, well I'm sure you're not going to brush that under the carpet. What do you plan to do about it?

Tonight I plan to drink wine. He has been wonderful since we got home. Truely gorgeous. They are both vegging in front of a dvd now which is nice for me as DH is at work (DH did not come away with us).

He normally goes to bed at 7 and he is shattered by then, but he was going around 10. I should have asserted myself more abotu bedtimes, but his cousins were all staying up and going to the kids' club so naturally he wanted to go too.

He has been up a height at the best of times and pure naughty at other times.

Both in bed tonight for 7. Wine and chinese takeaway and Dance X final for me

Off to unload and reload the washing machine......

I have no idea what you did but I'm sure if you ask the question what your mum would have done if you, as a child, had behaved in such way and spat on her face, you may not feel that bad about it.

It may have been handled better, but being human you can not be perfect at all times.

Don't cry....
Drink some wine, quickly!
Sorry you had such a crap time away.

Tell dh to stop being an arse for a moment and have a sensible chat with ds about WHY WE DO NOT SPIT AT MUMMY'S FACE.

I got a slap in mine recently but dp sorted it while I poured myself a large glass of wine

Oh dear, you poor love.

Just got back from awful holiday myself so can empathise. My ds was ok (apart from the usual 4 year old behaviour!) but it was a NIGHTMARE...rained the whole week, bits kept falling off the car (when we were on deserted country roads and it was p***g it down) and the accomodation was like something from Fawlty Towers.

Am going to get a bit squiffy myself tonight and watch a Kevin Spacey film on dvd.

(Have already unloaded my washing machine..only 3 more loads to go!)

Hope you feel better soon

hello popsy, sorry to hear your break didn't go so well. I had a similar day yesterday with my ds (lets just say the lessons of httskwl were completely abandoned in favour of shouting and timeouts due to hitting and smacking me and ds2 etc...), but today has been much better. Thank god it's not always so bad. and thank god for crap tv, junk food and wine (sorted me right out last night).

DS is hideous when he is overtired and usually takes a couple of days to recover. Makes sense. I am horrid when overtired and take a few days to recover too and I'm not growing.
I think you'll have to leave 'we do not spit on mummy chat' for a bit.

I find ice cream and wine very helpful.

There's just something about 5 year old DCs - boys or girls. DS3 (5) said yesterday "Why am I cursed with this family?". When he asked what I meant, he said "Everyone shouts at me for no reason."
a) I try (quite successfully) not to shout too often, b) He is the youngest of 4 with big age gaps so DS1 is a shocking 20, and so is spoilt rotten.
c) He punched DS2 in the eye over a TV ownership dispute and then hit DS1 in the neck over a computer ownership dispute.
What I'm trying to say is.. chin up, etc. They are horrible at this age - they won't always be, they are nice really, it's not bad parenting, it WILL PASS .

If he was getting 3 hours less sleep than usual a night, this could cause inexcusable behaviour in a saint IMO

When ds was little and I was very sleep deprived I did some bloody awful things

stupid things, and grumpy things, and out of character things

I am glad no-one punished me for them

He has been gorgoues since we got back
he has been in bed for 3 hours already

Hi Pospycal, 4/5 year old boys can be horrendous ? have a just turned 5 year old DS myself?.argh?? 4 day break? wasn?t Butlins (or the likes by any chance?).
Only ask cos for some reason, at the ripe old age of 40+ erm, quite a few, I stupidly decided that even though I have never done this type of holiday before in my entire life, it would be a good place for a 4 day break with DS (last week).
Hmm, now ? how many times did I say to very warn out looking parents arguing with their tantrumming kids ? ?bring ?em to Bultins and see your beautiful, darling, very well behaved children magically transform ? right before your very eyes - into the biggest, whingeing spoilt brats you have ever seen in your life!!?? ? not one disagreed with me?.

I think what happens really is that a 4 day (as opposed to single day) move from the norm is too much for them to deal with. Needs to be at least 2 weeks (maybe that?s why we mostly end up having 2-week vacations??) ? takes about a week for them to settle in to a different routine then roughly 5-6 day?s to get bored of it by which time it?s almost time to go home ? then the little blighters don?t want to go home?.whaaaaa?

Stick to the wine ? helps loads ? honest??

I think the sleep is the big thing. It would be awful in my DS. He was going to bed 3 hours later on holiday but having a nap every 2/3 days and also getting up later.

Report
bozza · 25/08/2007 21:08

And DS is 6 - so quite old for naps. The days he didn't nap and DD did he had a quiet time on the settee listening to music or reading.
