Weak grasp in right hand

My 5 month old DD1 has a weaker grasp in her right hand compared to her left e.g. she will hold a rattle for less time in her right hand. Also, she seems to move the right arm differently, she will rarely lift the right arm above her shoulder whereas she does this all the time with her left to scratch at her head etc. I'm worried sick about cerebral palsy. I've taken her to a orthopaedic Consultant and he doesn't seem too concerned but said she's too young to confirm either way. Just wondering if anyone else had any experience of this and what the result was? For information, I had a planned C Section at 37 weeks, forceps were used during the section, I presume because baby was in an unusual position. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, my daughter is stronger in her right hand and prefers her rattle in this hand, tbh I’m assuming she’s going to be right handed so prefers her rattle in her right hand. I also had a c section at 34 weeks. If the doctor has said not to worry I wouldn’t. My son was stronger in his right hand, now he’s 3 and draws with his right hand, also born with c section at 34 weeks.

Thanks for your reply. Did your son show a preference for his right hand as early as this? (i.e. 5/6 months).

Yes and my da has too, even this morning she had her rattle in her right hand, when I put it in her left she just dropped it. It’s same for us really I’m left handed and when somethings in my right it feels strange, I guess there the same.

Was searching for the same thing and found this. My DD has the same, she’s 7 months now and is very clearly left handed. She’s being referred for physio to encourage use of both hands and the doctors suspect nerve damage from forceps (she also has nerve damage in her face and had a lot of cuts/dents(!)/scarring when born to her neck and face from them). She’s been seeing the paediatricians for a while as was in NICU (6 weeks premature). CP hasn’t been mentioned yet but a brain scan has, so very nervous of that.
