When do you think a toddler is ready for big bed? What signs do I look for?

DS1 went into bed at 21 months for the same reason as mintchips! He was absolutely fine. I also know people have moved toddlers when they learn how to climb out of the cot! I think as long as they're a good sleeper just do it when you feel ready - and a prepared for a few nights of them "testing" if they can get up in the night!!

we moved ds out of cot and into toddler bed around 19months, purely cos he'd got too big for his cot (in retrospect should have bought a cot bed in the first place!). He was a bit daunted at first but now he loves it. He fell out a few times in the first 2-3 weeks, but doesn't anymore. We made sure his room was safe and we put a child gate across the door to stop him escaping in the night .
Its nice to be able to tuck him in and read him a story in his big boy bed,and if he wakes up early he can get up and play by himself.

I think when they're filling their cot and banging limbs every time they turn over!

I would have happily kept my ds in a cot for ages, but he was a tall child and outgrew it at two.

Personally I think there's no hurry at all, keep them in there while they're happy (and they fit!)

Thank you for all your replies. My DD is 19 months next week. We have a cot bed so didnt know when would be best to transfer it over. She sleeps so well - 12 hours every night!

blimey, 12 hours a night...if she's happy, LEAVE WELL ALONE!

There's no point rushing headlong to the days of putting them back to bed 500 times when they realise they are FREE! And worrying about where they could be foraging to in the middle of the night, putting locks on everything, worrying about whether you left the bleach in the bathroom.......

Nice, safe, cot sounds good to me

HG - that made me laugh! She has slept like that since she was 8 weeks old!

Clarevoiant - yes sides still on.
