Height (growth) slowed down(6 Posts)
This is my second child. Dad is 6’4 and my first is also quite tall. DS2 was big at birth and measured as being on the 92nd percentile for height when he was first measured. He has always worn a size bigger than what he was, until around 10 or 11 months when things slowed down. His 12 month check revealed he is now just under the 50th percentile for height but the HV said she wasn’t concerned as I’m quite short. But surely it’s a bit odd he started out as being tall?
He is now almost 14months and hasn’t grown much since. He eats very well and, similar to DD1 who has grown well, is on a vegetarian diet (he eats fish though and I make sure he has lots of protein). I still breastfeed him too.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Should I just wait a bit longer for a growth spurt or maybe ask for a second opinion?
Children grow differently, there is nothing abnormal about that. The growth doesn't have to follow a line.
My daughter was tall at birth, went down to average from around 6 months, was small at 1 year and for a few years, then was average again. Due to rather early puberty and the growth spurt that usually accompanies the start of puberty she was then tall again for a while. But then she predictably fell back again, because after their puberty growth spurt they don't grow so much any more, so now she is rather short-average. She is 14 now and probably won't grow much more, which means she'll end up short.
Confused much now?
Thank you! I think deep down I know not to worry as of course all children grow differently, but it’s just good to hear anecdotal evidence! Thanks for taking the time to reply x
If you would like some more anecdotes, my mother's 5' 1 best friend and her 6' 2 DH have 3 sons. The older two were always on the tallish side of things and did indeed end up both being 6' 2 like their father. The youngest started out average and then didn't grow much. He was a seriously tiny little boy so they figured he was going to be short like his mother. Nope. Sudden growth spurt in his late teens and he's 6' 6 now
And another... I have a son and a nephew born 2 days apart. At birth nephew was 17 inches and 5lb. Son a 9lb 2 footer.
At one point about a year ago my son hadn't been growing much and my nephew (who clearly was growing well at the time) stood next to my son and remarked that they were the same height now. This year though, my son is the one who has apparently been growing well, as he is a good 4 or 5 inches taller than his cousin at the moment.
Who knows what they'll end up like though, as they only turned four a month ago! Child growth definitely seems to be not quite as tidy and linear as the charts would have you believe though.
Thank you! I know it sounds daft when I’m expecting my son to follow a line. I guess I was just concerned that he’s smaller than average at the moment when he was such a big baby! I’m sure a growth spurt is coming soon.
Thanks for the reassurance x
My son was born 7lb at 42 weeks and left primary school second smallest in his class.
He's now 18, 6 foot 2 and still growing taller. His Dad is 6foot and I'm 5foot 8.
