Flitty 2yr old

So I'm going to sound like a loon but.... yesterday when I was picking up little one from nursery I asked if he was ready for the toddler room (he's 23 months and moves up next month) his key worker proceeded to say yes he is and hopefully being in that room will bring on his speech and it is more structured in there as he is quite "flitty"

I thought most 2yr olds were like this, yes his concentration isn't great but I don't know any toddlers that are good at sitting still for long periods.
It's got me worried sick, he does say quite a few words but apparently in the toddler room they're all talkers 😩

Not all children are talkers at 23 months but if your key worker has mentioned a concern, it's worth looking into.

Have a read if this from Talking Point. Can he do most of the things mentioned? They have a progress checker at 24 months. It might be worth waiting until he is 24 months and doing that. If it says there are any concerns, you can self refer for SLT and hearing tests in most areas.

As for being "flirty" can he concentrate for a time, say if they are sat on the mat or if he has a toy he's interested in?

Has anyone suggested doing the m-chat with him? smile

At 24 months, the average infant will have at least 50 words and start putting two word sentences together. If he is a little speech delayed he should be compensating by the overuse of gestures - how is his pointing to request and more importantly to share interests (like a plane in the sky?).

Yes he points to things, gestures what he wants and he'll even take me to show him. If I ask him to go pick something up "go get the puzzle piece for mummy" or "go get your drink" he will do it and say " there it is"
Key worker said she was concerned about speech but as he's talking a bit now not so much also that it seems to be on his terms and won't say anything when she does her one to one with him but will quite happily talk any other time 🤦🏼‍♀️

You might want to ask for a meeting with your keyworker so you can discuss what she means further and address any concerns you have.

'Flitty' is exactly how I'd describe my 27mo at the moment!

@IrisPurple he's moved up from baby room in to the toddler room and seems to have improved so putting it down to boredom in the baby room at the mo 🤦🏼‍♀️
