Tummy time

I'm getting worried about my DD who is 11 weeks.

Up to about 3 weeks old we religiously did tummy time. Then she started suffering with colic and reflux and I just didn't know the 'right time' to do it with her. I didn't want to do it after a feed because she'd spit up a lot, she used to fall asleep quite quickly after a feed so I didn't want to wake her up and then by the time she was waking up for her next feed and I'd changed her nappy etc I felt like it would distress her.

Anyway long story short we didn't do tummy time as much, now we've got control over reflux I've started doing it religiously again but I feel like I've set her back.

At the minute she can turn her head side to side with her face completely off the floor. She can support her head if we hold her under her arms or carry her so her stomach is on your chest.

We've tried tummy time with one of the 'specific' tummy time pillows, a feeding pillow, changing mat, blanket on the floor and on my chest.

Should she be able to lift her head up more? So her chin would be parallel with the floor?

Thanks X

Personally I wouldn't worry too much. My five month DS hated tummy time up until three weeks ago where he decided he wanted to roll and then sleep on his tummy. Prior to this he would cry if on his tummy longer than two minutes and only be able to lift and turn his head for a short time. He also had bad reflux.
I think once they decide they want to do it they just will. Good luck OP

I really wouldn't sweat it. Babies do things at their own rates, when they are ready, if you're really worried, maybe give your HV a call, and I'm sure they'll reassure you.

Anecdotally, my second baby hardly got any dedicated tummy time and he rolled and had head control much sooner than my PFB who had much more tummy time.

Thanks for the replies :) I've calmed down now! I was a little neurotic yesterday after seeing a baby her age with their head right up. I know I shouldn't compare but I couldn't help it!

I've been trying it last night and this morning and realised she hates it on the floor but if I have her on my tummy she bring her head up and looks straight at me.

Funnily enough just got a letter for her health and development review for next week so I'll mention it then, but I'm not as worried now :)

Honestly my DS hated tummy time from about 12 weeks so I didn't make him do it. He enjoyed other toys and his jumperoo. He was sitting up at 7 months, crawling at 8 months and walking at 11 months so it didn't negatively affect his development at all.

Of course it's great to do if you can but if baby doesn't enjoy it, I wouldn't force it. It's not the be all and end all. Smile

Just realised I missed out that if I have her on my chest she looks at me.

Oh that's good then, I haven't been putting her on the floor since. Not worth the ear ache! My mum did get her another tummy time pillow yesterday which has a mirror and other things and she seems to enjoy that for a minute or so.

What age did he start using a jumperoo?

Never did it. DS hated it.

Carried him every day while walking dogs which apparently is similar.

He seems to be JUST fine.

Yes he was a bit late walking and crawling but he's a big lad and just on the end of normal not significantly worrying.

I honestly did TT once a week at best with ds as he hated it- so did I

As soon as he started rolling himself onto his front at 4-5mo, he tolerated it much more. Strength grew quickly and he's definitely ahead of the curve movement and strength wise at 10 mo

I wish I hadn't stressed about TT as much as I did!!

That's so relieving. I knew in my head she'd develop either way but I was just feeling guilty thinking I'd let her down!

I've also carried her so she's been able to support herself (or try) so hopefully that's made up for the lack of tummy time! The last week or so she's loved being held on the end of your knee with your hands under her armpits, she gets quite cranky if you try and lay her back! I've ordered one of those mamas & papas baby snugs, I'm confident she'll be able to use it when it arrives.

I've realised now it's not worth stressing too much over! They move at their own pace and won't do anything they don't want to will they Grin
