My 7 month old has started waking up 4/5 times a night

I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Our 7mo had settled into waking just twice a night for a feed (he is breast fed). However, for the past week he has been waking up 4/5 times in a night! He wakes up crying, we try to settle him but he gets more and more upset until I feed him again. I have wondered if he is a little windy as we are weening him and he will often wake up and be pushing/tensing. Sometimes he will wake up say at 1am and want feeding, then only an hour later he will wake again crying and the only thing that settles him is to feed AGAIN. We aren't doing anything differently and are just feeling a little flabbergasted so wanted to know if anyone else is going through this? I thought once he started weening he'd sleep better as he would be more full... :(
