8 month old not crawling yet

Was just wondering should I be worried that my 8 month old isn't crawling yet he's never really been one for being in his belly and since he learnt to sit up a couple of months a go it's been even harder to lie him down and when I do manage to get him onto his belly he's only in it a couple of mins he either lifts his bum up and gets on to his knees for a couple of seconds or lifts his top half up he gets really stressed with him self because he can't quite do both together
Thanks

No, I wouldn't be remotely worried. 8 or 9 months is the average age babies figure out how to crawl, so he isn't behind at all. It just might feel like it, because some babies start crawling as early as 6 months.

My son was close to 11 months when he finally figured out how to crawl, and then started walking on his 1st birthday. So being a later crawler didn't hold him back at all.

None of mine ever crawled. Never showed the slightest interest. One went from sitting to pulling up and cruising around furniture to tottering steps at 11 months. The others bottom shuffled and scooted from around 8 months. Youngest was a bit older as she just saypt and pointed and the others fetched her things. She still does that!

OP, sounds like your DS is doing absolutely fine.

According to WHO research, 4.3% of babies never crawl on hands and knees and move straight to walking. Out of the remaining babies ("crawlers"):

  • 10% of babies crawl before 6.6 months;
  • 50% of babies crawl before 8.3 months;
  • 90% of babies crawl before 10.5 months;
  • 99% of babies crawl before 13.5 months.

My DD was in the bottom 1% - she crawled exactly when she turned 13.5 months. WHO schedule was useful - it made me aware DD was behind other babies in terms of her gross motor skills and could have used some help (exercises to strengthen her joints).

However, from what you have described, your baby might be a "non-crawler" and may either skip it completely or may start walking/cruising before crawling.

Thanks everyone a just feel like he should be doing it because theirs little ones 2 weeks younger than him who are getting into the crawling position a think it's just me worrying because he's my first because he's doing things like sitting g him self up from lying down on the floor and when I'm lucky enough to get him in his belly he can shuffle him self round in his belly but he doesn't like being on his belly prefers to be sat up

8 months is still quite young to crawl. My DD was about 9 months, my DS didn't crawl at all. He didn't do anything much until about 11 months when he bum shuffled, then he pulled up at 13 months and walked at 14 months.
Don't worry about it, you said he can sit up and I presume he can weight bear when you hold him up? That's all they need at 8 months

Yea he can bear his weight when a hold him up and can sit up on his own

Mine didn't crawl til 10.5 months OP, and walked about 14-15 months, so within the bounds of the normal range but perhaps slightly slower than 'average'. At the time I compared him to similar aged children but by about 18 months you wouldn't know the difference.

A think I'm just worrying being a first time parent and all the books say he should be doing this that and the other by a certain age when a shouldn't really be going if them because a know babies develop at their own speed and are all different its with him having his 9-12 month check next month

My son didn’t crawl until 10 months (and didn’t sit unsupported until around that time too). Don’t compare: Drs don’t investigate mobility delays until babies are about 18 months old for the reason that no baby is a “standard” when it comes to developing.

DS1 never crawled, he went from sitting to walking at 10 months. DS2 never crawled, he went from sitting to walking at 16 months. DS3 crawled from about 10 months, but didn't walk confidently until nearly 2yo.

My daughter never crawled - she was a bottom shuffler till about 16 months when she started walking. She had little friends crawling at 5 months and walking at 11 months! They do things in their own time and your son is well within the ‘normal’ timeframe.

My eldest crawled at 10 months, my second at 9.5 months, and my third has just started crawling at 7 months (bit of a shock as I thought I had another couple of months before he's be mobile going by my other two 😂)
There is such a wide range of 'normal'. Xx
