Boy talking at 15 months

I thought my DS who's 15mths was a genius doing ok with his talking. He has four clear words understandable by everyone Mummmmmmmmmmmummmmummm, Dad, cat & Up.

So apart from the 3 words he talks sentences of babble to himself when playing or exploring. It's a bit like those kids Tv characters that don't speak word just make noises "hmmmm hppppp hmmm cooooo munmnnnum ah" etc

But I keep meeting children his age and younger (particularly girls) with loads of unusual words. Had a just turned one year say "Bubble," "plane" and "Bee" during an activity class today, when pointing at said items.

I know some parents say little Johnny knew 50 word including hippopotamus at 15 months and I usually think oh yeah, but when I'm hearing babies the same age say "truck" "Digger" "bunny" I am thinking my DS is behind ?

So dd1 pretty much only said mum, dad, yes and no til she was 18 months. She’s now some kind of bizarre child genius with a vocab bigger than me. I can’t believe I ever worried.

DD2 is 15 months and seriously has over 50 words and can say hippopotamus. She’s not called Johnny though :)

He sounds totally normal (whatever than means)....

Oh good normals fine !!! I just read on the baby centre emails that's boys can be a bit slower with words.

I do talk to DS loads & read to him, but actually he doesn't hear much conversation at home as my DH works very long hours and groups etc are very noisey Hmm So it's only if we have visitors etc.

ScoobyLou do you think your DD2 talks more as she has your older one to chat with and there is more conversation around her? My DS is my first.

Yeah, definitely. My best friends little boy is the same age and is her first, he says mum, dad, up and yes. Your little boy sounds perfect!

Totally normal! I can't remember how many words DS had at 15 months but it was less than 6, as the HV said at his check that 1-6 is normal at that age!

He's 21 months and now has LOADS, well over a hundred (more like 200 to be honest as he literally repeats everything) and has been putting two words together for a while eg bye bye mummy, daddy's car/shoes/knee, more milk etc.
