My son is currently 4 years old (5 in September). I picked him up from day care this evening (he also goes to preschool in the mornings). His childminder mentioned to me that my son had shown his private parts to a little girl that goes and how he thought it was funny. She explained that she explained to him how he shouldn't do it etc and the reasons why. I feel mortified that my 4 year old has done this, where he has picked it up from and why he has done it. When I asked him why he just said he didn't know. I asked him if anyone had asked him to do it and he said the little girl had asked him. I also explained to him that he shouldn't do it etc and the reasons why and if someone asks him to do it he should say no and tell me or his childminder if he is there. Now, basically is it just a kid thing and a phase they all go through (I don't recall going through it at his age) or should I be worried.

They're both just kids, and are curious about their bodies and how they're different. I wouldn't worry at all... there's certainly no need to be mortified.

You've handled it perfectly by using the opportunity to explain to him why our private parts are private, and what to do in the future.
