11 month old poor physical development?

I'd be grateful for other people's perspective on my DS's development. He's 11 months, and my first child.

Comparing him to other babies the same age he seems physically quite different. The others are clambering around all over the place and seem to have such strong legs and torsos. My DS

  • sits and bum shuffles a bit
  • doesn't crawl- he can't seem to hold his knees under his body
  • hates lying on his tummy
  • will stand with support if I put him in that position but doesn't pull to stand
  • when standing he can't bend his knees to eg pick up a toy
  • he has also had terrible difficulties starting solids and is only now starting to taste foods by licking them off his fingers, but we think that could be down to recently diagnosed allergies.

He seems to have good fine motor skills, is babbling and is generally happy and sociable but I'm getting worried about how different his physical movement is to his friends and all sorts of scary things come up on google but none quite seem to fit him.

I will take him to the gp but I feel like I've badgered them so much for help with his eating and allergies I want to check if this is within the realms of normal or signs of another problem.

Does anyone recognise this or have any ideas or advice?

At 11 months dd wasn't crawling or pulling to stand etc .
She was sat on her bottom doing nothing .

At 12 months she crawled
At 13 months she pulled to stand
At 15 months she stood up in the room without support
At 16 months has taken her first steps .

None of what you said would concern me at all

Also it's normal never to crawl

Could you speak to your HV first if you don't want to see a GP?

There is a huge variation in what is "normal". My first didn't crawl, I'm sure, till about 12 months, and didn't walk until about 18 months. Didn't sit up unsupported till 9/10 months. Weaning was an absolute nightmare as he didn't "get" chewing for ages and in the end I gave up and kept him on puree for months on end.

He was, and is, totally "normal".

It would be worth a chat with your HV though I think, if only to put your mind at rest.

Thanks for your responses- I've found them quite reassuring.

I did speak to my health visitor. She couldn't give a view as to whether there was anything to worry about but said she would refer DS to a physio for an assessment. Then I got a letter from the physio saying that he didn't meet the criteria to even have an assessment!

Hi, normally between 7-11 months the HV will do a proper developmental review - have you had this yet? If physio say he doesn't meet the criteria then they aren't concerned enough to see him, which is a good thing!
