What happened?

Last night my son just went a bit mad!
He's 5 months old (today) and last night when we tried to put him down for bed, out of no where he started crying which is extremely out of character. It was fully ok, heart breaking, uncontrollable, scream crying and it was on continually for about 2 hours. He was so red in the face and boiling, so I had him stripped naked on my chest near an open window to try and cool him down. I tried everything to console him and ended up wresting him into his car seat and going for a drive for half an hour before he finally cried himself to sleep. I was absolutely deranged by the end of it. Nothing different had happened that day, no change to the routine or anything.
