Good morning guys..
i'm worries a little about my 19 mo son... I 'm not sure what it is and i'm not sure why... i've been wanting to post about it, and i've come to the conclusion that it would help me greatly if any of you with LO's a similar age, could tell me about their development emotionally, behaviourly etc.
what do they say?, what do they like, what do they watch, what do they like to do?
i am not concerned about his eating or physical development, he's a greta eater and areal action man. I also fully appreciate that all children are different (I have 3)
you'd really be helping me get my head around this...
Thank you in advance .x

OK, my ds is 18 mo. He is mischievous - if he knows he's not supposed to do something he does it then gives me a BIG grin. He has about loads of words, but unless you know what he's saying, they all sound the same. He has decided that he's too big for nappies now - but he's not, so there's a lot of following him around with a potty and clearing up wee.

He is very good at hugs and kisses and is always happy to see his big big sister and his dad when they get home in the evening, although he doesn't like being separated from me.

He sleeps through the night.

Does this help?

TV - things he recognises he likes, but I think just because he has recognised them, he's not bothered about watching anything really, except Boo. He really likes Boo.

He doesn't have a favourite toy, although he will want to play with different things, depending on his mood.

He doesn't have any kind of comfort blanket or toy and although he did have a dummy when he was a baby, he has given this up now.

fryalot · 15/03/2007 08:06

He likes to dance.

If there is any kind of music - even just an advert his little body starts bopping.

McDreamy · 15/03/2007 08:07

DS has a taggy but apart from that has no emotional attachment to any other toys but will always play with cars or anything with wheels. DD didn't have a fav toy until she was about 2.

He will ask for Bob on the TV and like everyone else he has many words but unless you spend lots of time with him you wouldn't know what he is saying.

fryalot · 15/03/2007 08:08

Just watching him now - he likes to fetch and carry things for people. If you mention that you want something, even if it's not to him, he's gone and got it for you.

Thank you.
really, i'm feeling much better about this.
he has acouple of words, but DD wasn't taht fast a speaker at his age.
it's just the way that he doesn' a'ask' fr anything.
he's incredibly destructive, but he's not an 'angry' child, it's all done with a smile on his face!
i genuinley think he likes to see the sound and reaction when something hits the floor!
doesn't really want to play with anything though. sits silently to watch bits of certain movies (toy story, lil mermaid).
does this sound normal, or am I a paranoid mum!! lol

Squonk - that's just what I feel he's lacking, is not making any mental connection with things (not articulating this well), doen't even ask for anything himself (verbally or non0 let alone able to fetch anything when asked - doesn't seem to recognise objects???
oh.. i don't know!

Hi

Sounds like my 17-month old.

He has no particular attachment to anything which I find surprising (although not worrying at all). He kind of likes his rubber duck but not in any major way. He has lots of toys but has no particular interest in any of them - plays with something for about 30 seconds and then moves on to the next thing.

He says lots of words (in two languages) but you have to know what he is saying to understand.

He is quieter than most kids his age and likes to stay near me when we are somewhere unfamiliar.

He is very loving and cuddly, comes for a cuddle every now and again.

He refuses to sit in his buggy but gets tired quickly and wants to be carried.

He loves his books and will refuse to get up from the potty even after 30 mins because he wants to be read to more.

Usually sleeps through but is an early riser.

Hope this helps.

Your ds sounds normal to me. Being the mother of two older girls, I was amazed at how different ds is to the girls. I know they are all different but he is SO different, I think it's a boy/girl thing. Are your other two girls?

ds is 21mo so a bit older

a bad day to be reporting back as he was awake at 5:30 and is a real grouch, but:

sleeping: doesn't wake at night but wakes early (after 6 is a good night)

eating: not a good area for us. enjoys finger foods, but otherwise has to be 'persuaded' (ususally = fed)

behaviour/development: he chatters in his own language but none of it is the same as ours - we get the occasional "no" or maybe something that might be "da" or "ma"

he's outgoign and sociable - enjoys running around the house, playing with balls and anything with wheels. seems to enjoy being around other children but doesn't really interact with them yet

enjoys some tv - noddy, teletubbies, baby einstein, anything with justin from cbeebies ...

hope this is helpful

(thought it might be helpful to read about a 21mo because - although i care not two hoots about it - would probably be considered 'behind' most milestones...)

I have a 19m old ds. What does he say? He has a vocab of about 50-60 words; a couple of days ago he said "hello sula" to the dog but apart from that it's just one word at a time. What does he like? We live in a small port and he loves boats and ferries. What does he like to watch? He doesn't watch much TV but given a chance he enjoys teletubbies and just about any cartoon. What does he like to do? He likes playing with duplo (he can fix the bricks to each other), cuddling soft toys, throwing a ball, going for walks, looking at books (though he will not be read to), having cuddles with me, dh and his sisters, and tickling people (!). He has strong attachments to people and recognises places. He is not yet able to share. He responds well to instructions and is a fairly biddable child but will occasionally object to doing certain things. He doesn't really tantrum (yet ).

Hope this helps!

I have an 18 month old ds. He's starting to link words together, like 'more biscuits' or 'more chocolate' lol - but often like others have said you have to have an idea of what he's saying to be able to understand.

He's lovely and affectionate, but likes to climb on everything and takes great pleasure in doing things he shouldn't. Sitting on the fireplace is the latest one (lucky it's never on!) Then gives you a big cheely grin afterwards!

Loves to drop/break/bang things.
Anything remotely destructive really.
Loves to splash water EVERYWHERE and generally is most happy if he's making a mess.

Has a couple of favourite toys (teletubbies) and a couple of tv shows that he'll watch for a minute or two. But generally moves from toy to toy every 30 seconds and switches the tv off in the middle of something he really liked the day before!

HTH!

DD is v different to DS at same age. He was very physical (running, climbing, throwing, wrestling etc) she is more focused (plays with dolls copies housework etc) and likes books more. Also talking much better than DS at same age (but can't walk yet).

My DS is 21 months and doesn;t seem to have any attachement to a comfort object. I;ve tried to encourage him with soft toys, blankets etc but he shows no interest really - he will give them a cuddle if you ask him to but not of his own accord so I have just left it.

He has words but generally only one at a time and many of them only I would know - da da is actually tractor whereas Daddy is obviously daddy.

He loves fire engines and tractors - although he is very eco conscious and considers any 4 wheel drive to be a "dada" and shouts and points at them in the street.

He loves physical play - being held upside down etc and rolling around on the floor.

He likes to watch cbeebies but doesn't express a preference for any programme but will point things out on the tv like dogs, tractors etc

he can take off his coat by himself and with help can put it on, and will do things like lifting up a leg etc to get into clothes.

IF you ask him for something he will go and get it for you.

In stories he can say the words of bits coming next eg if we read "kiss good night Sam" he know to say "whoo whoo" for the wind and "oh no" at the right points etc

Hope that is helpful

My 19m old DS2 is like this
Sleeps very very well
Eats like a pig
Can follow quite complex instructions
BUT
Only has about 5 words that all begin with B- bear, bye etc
Can say animal noises but not their names!!! (why is moo easier than cow!!)
Has no interest whatsoever in TV (despite my best efforts)
Likes to sit in empty boxes!
Has no attachment to anything except me and daddy and DS1- he is and has always been very clingy.
Does have quite good attention though and will play with one thing for c 5 mins (but it has to have wheels)
Loves mess- splashig in bath, tipping out whole boxes of toys, ripping paper, etc etc
He is behind DS1 - I had DS2 when DS1 was this age and he was talking quite well. But I am not worried they are all different.
I think boys in general are less able to concentrate

DD will be 18 months in a few days time.

She has recently started talking more and we are starting to understand her more . She has a variety of words from Mummy and Daddy to uh-oh with cat and bowl somewhere in between. She understands a lot more than she says and will follow simple commands (when the mood takes her).

She loves her 3 year old brother, wants to do everything he does, even when her legs are blatently too short. She has a great interest in the potty and likes using it before she has a bath.

She likes her teddy and also her doll. Also creating as much mess as she can in the shortest space of time. She is starting to be a little more crafty in getting what she wants, espeically in getting toys DS is playing with. She likes looking at books, preferably when on my knee and als oplaying with cars and going nee-naa (i think they are all emergency vehicles).

She does not sleep through the night, despite having a much loved thumb to suck and teddy to cuddle .

She doesn't et that interested in television, although has been known to get a Dora the Explorer DVD out of the cupoboard and say Dor Dor.

dd is 17 months and the youngest of 3.

She thinks she is a power ranger and plays with her brothers so some of the games get a bit rough. She loves the tellietubbies and fifi.
Most of all she loves her shoes......her mothers daughter here. She speaks in short 3 word sentences when the mood takes her and we have also reached the terrible two's tantrums.
She sleeps through from about 9pm till 6 am which I can go with, eats well and follows her brothers when they go to the toilet but we haven't pushed the potty thing.

Thanks so much guys. this is such a help. My boy literally has three words that he is very selective about using. DD didn't speak all that quickly though, so i am used to that. I don't even own a potty yet!, DD was 2.5, so I'm not holding out any hope for this one. I think my biggest worry is the way he doesn't as for anything, point and name, or even point or grunt for that matter - just like he's a bit oblivious.
You've really put my mind at rest, thanks!

The 18/19 month period was the hardest for me. DD would not talk, or she would 'talk' sometimes (by which I mean point at something and make a noise that vaguely resembled the word for the thing she was pointing at) but not consistently. Gradually I learned how to interpret her sign languages and noises. At around two her speech sort of exploded. I've still got the list of her 'words' from the early days....I stopped counting them after seventy or so. Remember (it's hard to notice this when you're with your kid all the time): even a basic 'mmmmmm' can mean 'more food please'. Or a 'wa wa wa' while your little one is playing with dolls might mean 'walk'.
My dd was plagued with ear infections, so I always expected her speech to be delayed. But it's still alarming when you're the one Mum at playgroup whose kid doesn't talk at 18-19 months.
Curse those playgroups, is what I say!
