DS is 4 weeks old, his umbilical cord dried up and fell off of its own accord at about 1 week old. At that point, this red bump was covered mostly by a layer of healed skin, and I presumed it must heal over that way. This red lump has gradually popped out even more over the past week or so. I've kept it clean with cool boiled water and kept his babygrow off to let it air dry, which doesn't seem to help. As you can see I've not cleaned it yet this morning and it is a bit gammy round the sides from weeping. The skin around it is a normal temperature, it's quite a fresh pinky colour - not a harsh red and it doesn't appear to hurt him whatsoever. I may be forgetting but in pretty sure my daughters didn't do this. Should I ring docs ASAP? Or does this happen and I just forgot?!

I would get it looked at but I don't think it warrants a trip to A&E

I would ask the midwife/health visitor to take a look. Can you ask them next time you take him to get weighed or give them a ring on Tuesday.

I've four DC , one under six month and don't recall any of theirs looking like that

I'd get it checked out but not a+e

Might need antibiotics but is an emergency is that redness spreads to the surrounding skin. Keep an eye on it.

Could it be a hernia? I never seen one.

He's so little I actually would take him to A and E. You can't be too careful with babies - they can go downhill very quickly.

Wolfie I was also thinking possible hernia, my daughter had one also on her belly button when she was little but it wasn't raw, it was just a lump of skin, so I don't really know either!

Looks like it might be overgranulating. Which in itself isn't a problem but a trip to see HV/GP when they reopen would be good.

Looks like an umbilical cord granuloma. Should heal up fine. I'd ask someone to look at it after the weekend to reassure you.
