Delayed gross motor skills

Was anyone else's baby slow to crawl and walk?

DD is 13 months. She was born slightly pre-term and had a low birth weight (0.4th centile but now up to 50th). She has a very small hole in her heart which is being monitored and they still think may close. No other issues that we are aware of.

She doesn't crawl, she'll shuffle 360 degrees on the spot pretty quickly but that's it and she's only been doing that for a week. If you stand her up at some furniture she will balance well and stand and play with items on that surface. She doesn't cruise and she doesn't pull herself up.

Her fine motor skills are excellent. She claps, waves and points, she babbles lots, can say Teddy and understands a few phrases such as "Do you want some milk?" and "Where's teddy?".

It's only really gross motor that I'm worried about, I think she's in the normal range for the other things. I've been frightening myself by reading about conditions that a baby with delayed gross motor and a heart defect may have. The health visitor seemed entirely unconcerned as she is showing progress, very slow progress!

Any experiences?

DC1 had similar development. Full term, average birthweight but very poorly at birth. Held head up early and sat up early and then that was it. No crawling. Bum shuffling limited to a bit of bounicng about more or less on the spot. Could bear weight on legs but didn't pull up or roll over or cruise at 12 month check up.

We were concerned because of the problems at birth and whether it had caused long term damage. However, within 2-3 months DC1 was walking, signed off at 18 months check up and now a healthy nearly teenager.

With no other problems, you would probably not be wrong to be keeping an eye on things but not needing to be at panic stations just yet. However, I don't know how (if at all) the heart problem might complicate things. Are you under a specialist that you can run it past?

I think that sounds within the normal range - my friend's full term, healthy DD didn't learn to walk until she was at least 18 months. And I don't remember her crawling much before then either. But her other skills were fine, speech quite advanced and now at age 4 there's no way you'd notice. In fact, she caught up on the gross motor skills really quickly. My DS started walking at about a year old but was wobbly and hesitant for months. Her DD went straight from sitting still to climbing up ladders!

My son didn't crawl till about 15 months. He had pnemonia at 11 months and it knocked him back developmentally. He also had a childminder (and her daughter, and me and grandparents) who then babied him more at he was recovering. by 19months he was walking. There time yet don't stress!

1of my dds has a development delay born at 36 weeks, she never crawled bum shuffled and rolled she walked at 17 months which is within range if you are worried speak to your HV. she sounds like she is doing ok though.

She does see a consultant about her heart. Last appointment was when she was 11 months. They had no concerns about where she was at that stage and don't want to see her again for a year. I could try and speak to them so they can tell me if I'm just being an overly concerned ftm.

There could definitely be an element of us babying her too much. She was in special care after she was born and was such a tiny, fragile dot of a baby. Part of me still sees her that way despite her being a chubby, boisterous 13 month old. We do tend to give her whatever she wants and never let her cry Blush

Soo if she wants something out of reach you hand it to her ? Tut tut Grin you need to allow her to get a bit frustrated so she she motivates herself to move I appreciate the was a dinky dot my Dd was 4lb 4 but you need to let her do stuff, her heart condition must have been a worry but it is ok for her to cry sometimes Flowers

We have started to make her work for stuff now. She kept falling on her face when trying to reach for things so I was just trying to stop her doing that really.

I think personality could be a factor too. She's quite cautious in any new situation and has always seemed happy to sit back and watch.

Sounds like she's happy sitting and taking everything in, I bet one day she'll just get up and walk Smile

I think some babies learn by getting frustrated about things and trying over and over until they manage and others watch carefully, figure out the best way of doing something then when they are ready, they do it. Think you might have one of the second type!

The spinning on the spot has now progressed to full on bum shuffling around the room, she seems very happy to get around that way. Still does not pull up or cruise.
I'm thinking of giving up on our attempts to get her to crawl. We still do some tummy time and she HATES it, cries in under a minute even though we've done it every day for 14 months. I just feel like she's never going to crawl and we should just forget it and focus on improving her standing.
