Anaemic 5 year old - how to disguise taste of drops?

My 5-year old just had a blood test and we were told he is anaemic and will need to take iron supplements for the next 3 months. The problem is convincing him to take the drops of iron. He needs 5ml so it's quite a lot to disguise the taste of. I dilute them in orange juice but I have to really put in a lot of juice to disguise the taste and even then there is still a weird aftertaste. This morning I had to bribe him with chocolate to get him to drink the full glass.

Has anyone any suggestions on how to get the drops into him? What hides the taste best? Our doctor suggested the orange juice to help with absorption but it doesn't seem to hide the taste much.

We give Dc's Feroglobin liquid iron. It tastes lovely! Don't know if you can get it on prescription though.

I use the wellkid syrup vit and iron on the baby, used it in the first DD too - tastes ok ish so I would try an iron syrup first as pp said. My bigger dd now has occasional spatone sachets buried in her drink and doesn't seem bothered.

Add it to a yoghurt instead

We used to add it to a chocolate petit filous - not exactly healthy but it did the job

As you should avoid giving iron with dairy, we mixed the iron solution with a few drops of squash, and gave it in a Calpol type syringe.

Thanks everyone. I tried it with a few different types of juice and grape was his favorite so grape juice it is! He's got a little more colour in his face already Smile

We had prescription iron for ds1 for ages....he was dairy free at the time, I gave it in a spoon of chocolate/ vanilla soya dessert.
Highly reccommend bassett multivitamins and calcium supplements - jelly ones in little jars - dc think they are sweets!
