Ds (2.5) not really speaking well yet - his latest thing though is to make a constant 'mmmmmmmm' sound. It is driving me nuts and is also disconcerting. Does anyone else have similar experiences ? Do you reckon it's 'just a phase'?

I wouldn't worry too much, it sounds like he is practicing sounds he is hearing. Does he say other words? You will find that they don't really speak properly for ages then suddenly they come out with more words and just keep going. My DS used to go 'Grrr' until we realised he was copying us when we were irritated....

Well - he does know a fair amount but only really speaks when he is in the mood. He can't do sentences - just words. We are in line for an assessment.
