23 month old headbutting - Help!

Hi, any advice here welcome! I know this is a common problem but I am literally fresh out of ideas on how to stop it. My ds is very boisterous and is very prone to tantrums when things don't go his way. The past month or so the tantrums seem to have escalated in to dropping to the floor or running to the nearest wall/door/person and headbutting them, always 3 times. After he has done this and realised it hurts he then just sobs and quickly seems to snap out of it and carry on as normal. I've tried several approaches to handle this including cuddling, talking to, telling off and ignoring but nothing has worked yet. It's getting more frequent if anything and to the point where you can really see his frustration and I'm scared he is really going to hurt himself and it's heartbreaking to see when he gets bruises on his head. I never hit my children and don't want people to see the bruising and think I am! With my daughter this never happened and although she had bad strops no headbutting ever happened. He will even try to headbutt me when I pick him up when he has a temper on him and believe me, it hurts! I don't know if anyone has any tips they have tried to help but I am eager to try as it's wearing me down. Normally he is such a lovely lad and a really happy chap with a charming personality but these tantrums completely transform him. We had 7 bouts of headbutting today alone from doorframe to grass outside to the tiles on the kitchen floor. Help!!
