Should a 7 year old be showering by themselves or is help generally what is still required?

DS is 8 and has just started showering instead of bathing. He needs help getting the shower turned on and setting the temperature, height of the shower head etc.
After I've done that I leave him to it. Apart from repeated shouted warnings to him about being careful getting out because it's slippery! Grin

By themselves I reckon.
My 5you showers by herself, kind of, I put her in, put soap in her hands, we do the wash song Grin then I leave her to rinse and play for a bit.

I have a 6 year old DD who has been showering on her own for about the last 12 months. I just set the temperature and put out the body wash, shampoo and sponge and she gets on with it. The only thing I have to watch is how long she's in there for - she's worse than me for long showers!

I'd say depends on the child. Ds3 is super independent and was showering by himself aged 5.

Ok thanks guys, I just wondered where it usually stands, so I guess depends on the child

Yes, but not hair wash (long hair) and she's too small to set the temperature and shower head so I prepare it for her.

I'd say 7yo could manage a shower. All of mine were 5 or 6 when they went independent. We started letting them take control with me supervising, to them having everything put out in order, ready for them to use, and me checking them before they got out, to total independence. Dd1 will be 7 in August and has long thick hair and she is brilliant at washing her own hair, the only thing she struggles with is squeezing thecwatervour of her hair at the end, she has a go but doesn't have the strength in her hands yet.

I'd say by themselves

Dd (6) showers and baths by herself, however I'm usually changing sheets or doing something that's conveniently upstairs and checking she's ok. Not quite brave enough to go downstairs yet and leave her to it.

My 4 year old can turn on the shower (with a pre-determined temperature setting). He then waits for it to heat up a bit and showers by himself. He then shouts, 'Soap time Mummy', and I come and give him his soap, or soap him myself. Obviously I have to shampoo his hair for him, but otherwise he does it himself. He can also turn the shower off, dry himself and change into his night clothes if I put them out for him. Again, I have to brush his teeth but he takes a stab at doing it himself first. But I'm usually on the same floor, pottering around with the bathroom door open and he is usually singing at the top of his voice.

DS is 4 and has showers on his own, but needs help in and out of the bath. He will wash his own body but I have to get a surprise flannel on his face!

it depends a lot on the shower, with old fashioned ones it can be quite diufficult and dangerous to set the temperature. With modern ones thermostatically controlled ones it is much less likely that they will get scalded

I wouldn't leave a 4 year old alone in a shower.

Do leave my 7 year old though but I'm usually nearby or sat in the bathroom on the chair just chatting to her while she gets on with it
