Bragging 5 year old

Since DS has started school he has started with the whole bragging thing (eg. my dad's better/bigger/older (?!Bless him) than your dad etc). When him and a friend get together it is a nightmare and just turns in to this huge competition about everything. Very unpleasant.

It is really not making him sound like a nice little boy at all and I'm quite upset about it. He is pfb, so I don't have much experience with these things. I just want him to be happy and have good friendships.

I feel a bit of a failure, I don't know how he has ended up so competitive. We have tried to model good behaviour, we don't brag, we don't let him win all the time, he does lots of team sports, he has always been around lots of other children and I thought he understood about being a nice friend etc.

I don't know how to stop it to be honest, I don't think he would even understand the term bragging. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I think that's just part of the nature of communication at that age. If you listen, there's little flow to any exchange and it tends to go...
I'm going to see grandma (not acknowledged by other party)
I'm going to see X (not acknowledged by original speaker)
I think we hear it as bragging but it's just their way of working stuff out.

Just a phase- it will pass.

Thank you, I shall try and chill out about it a bit.
