Nuts!

What exactly is the rule on nuts?

I have a really yummy recipe for salmon fish cakes which uses pine nuts but unsure if my 20 month old can have them.

Any ideas?

TIA

The official advice is no nuts before 5 years old. I however have accidentally given my dd pesto which had pine nuts in. She also tried a bit of chocolate spread with hazelnut in. The reason babies can't have nuts is in case they are allergic and go into anaphylactic shock. So it's up to you really to decide if your willing to take the risk. If not just make your recepie with out the nuts

The 5 year advice refers to whole nuts due to choking ,otherwise they're fine from 6 months unless there's a history of food allergies.

This is straight from the NHS BTW not a personal opinion.

I agree that nut products/peanut butter, etc are ok from 6 months and whole nuts are supposed to be avoided until age 5 due to a choking risk. Ds had toast and peanut butter at 9 months old

from nhs:

Nuts

Whole nuts, including peanuts, shouldn't be given to children under five as they can choke on them. As long as there's no history of food allergies or other allergies in your family you can give your baby peanuts once they're six months old as long as they're crushed or ground into peanut butter.

Nuts are fine for babies over 6 months. It's whole nuts that are not recommended as they're a choking risk.

That advice must have changed then, what I wrote is what I was taught during my childcare training a couple of years ago

It has been that advice for many years now (ok from 6 months) and it was that advice when I was weaning ds and he is 8 now. It was him that had peanut butter at 9 months

in fact it used to say not to introduce before age 3 if there was a family history and no whole nuts before age 5 due to a choking risk.

The advice on eating peanuts in pregnancy, while breastfeeding and peanuts during weaning was changed in 2009.

Pine nuts aren't actually nuts. They come under seeds so I think you are fine.

The advice on nuts changed again recently saying that they now positively advise parents to introduce them in small quantities (ground up etc), if possible before age 1, because of a major new study showing that it decreases the chances of allergies. It got a lot of media coverage a few months back - I remember hearing radio interviews about it.
