DS (2.2) is a Thomas The Tank Engine addict! ...

dh created a monster... a friend gave ds a lovely little Thomas lunchbox and ds was right smitten because it has a tschutschu on it. dh decided ds must like Thomas (and boy was he right) and bought him a simple hardboard book, showing 5 of the main engines. Since that day we get the book shoved at us first thing in the morning and throughout the day to be 'read' to ds . Hey it's great that he loves books, but if I have to read that book one more time... argh. O.k. advantage... I finally know which engine is which, but... guess what ds is cuddling this very moment to finally go to sleep...

yup...

the book!

I tried swapping it for a Thomas sock as naturally much softer, but no... now he's grabbing both things in his little hands

Defo an addict LOL

Don't worry - they do eventually grow out of it. ds was Thomas mad until his grandad introduced him to the world of (even more expensive) Hornby electric trainsets, and suddenly Thomas was "for babies"!

Blackduck · 05/11/2006 09:45

Lets see
Thomas hat, scarf and gloves set (at least he bl**dy WEARS them...)
More thomas trains than are strictly required (AND he goes through the leaftlets that come in them and points out the ones he doesn't have)
Thomas PJs
Thomas slippers (Xmas present)
and, what can I hear?, Thomas DVDs......

BUT he knows his numbers, his colours and his shapes so there is a plus (I think!!)

We've just bought a Thomas bed for our 2 yr old DS. He LOVES Thomas!
He is a late-talker and recognising Thomas is really helping his speech come out. Bargain bed as well, just $218 (about 80 quid).

We are coming out of the Thomas era I think - ds (4) has recently discovered Thunderbirds .... The Thomas era started when ds was about 18 months old, and when we had the sleeping problems, promising him another (bl£$%y) engine for x stickers was the catalyst for sorting out the problems ... it is said my many in my family that I know far too much about trains for a girl!

Now the wooden train set he has is a home for stories starring all the engines and the Thunderbirds - you have to see it to believe it!

My dad has also introduced ds to the model railways, and they go off visiting model railways for the whole afternoon ... I must admit that I sometimes feel that I've inadvertantly bred an anorak!

My ds has been Thomas's no.1 fan since about 18 months. (He's 2 and 3 quaters now).

He knows the name of all the trains (I'm talking Sir Handel and Stepney here )

However one thing to bear in mind that the Natoinal Autistic Society (or poss. something slightly different but basically that) has adopted THomas and commissioned special Thomas books, because Thomas teaches small children, esp. boys, how to interpret emotions in a unique way. The facial expressions on the trains are really useful for teaching even young toddlers to work out how others may be feeling. I always ask ds how THomas or whoever is feeling by asking what kind of face he has in that picture (is he sad? Is he scared? Is he excited? Is he happy?)

So that's good, isn't it?

I've learnt a lot about coupling rods and sidings as well....

Report
tassis · 06/11/2006 21:05

Yes isn't it funny to hear a 2.5 year old talking about "coupling" and "buffers"!!

For those of you who have Thomas fans may I suggest that you try to go to a "Day Out with Thomas" at a steam railway. Their wee faces when they're greeted by the Fat Controller on the platform and get to have a ride on Thomas are just so adorable!

PMSL..

You have ONE Thomas book in the house?

We have about 25.

DS is in training for Mastermind specialist subject..you guessed it.

Whenever we buy anything Thomas related, he gets the little leaflet that comes with them out and pores over it for hours asking what all the engines are called.

He has gone to bed tonight with Emily (the wooden engine), Molly (ditto), both Emily & Molly books (the latest thing is he has to match teh story with the engine, but doesn;t have many engines yet), a selection of trucks in a cardboard box..

However, recently the beloved Thomas video has been replaced by a video of DH's with Robbie Coltrane presenting it (I think it's called trains planes & automobiles) - DS loves watching the steam train section..

I am just off to buy him a proper anorak now

My dd1 (aged 4) is a massive Thomas fan so it's not just a boy thing. I have the same encyclopaedic knowledge as she does, and to my shame was pleased with myself when I recognised Oliver and dh didn't. Her little sister (aged 2) is also a Thomas fan, and both of them have moved onto steam engines, traction engines etc - they sit for hours glued to dvds with names like 'The Giants of Steam' and 'Traction engines at Work' and go to vintage tractor rallies whilst dh and I look on in bemusement.

my DTs are obsessed by "Momass" as they call him - they are nearly 2 and someone bought them a set of 30 books....

They want to have them reaad to them all day long, they take a couple of books to bed with them every night and DT1 knows the names of all the characters on teh back - if you say "where is Peter Sam" - he can point to it. Its quite freaky.

My DS1 (21) was completely obssed with Thomas, and in those dark dismal days before CBeeBees/digital/satallite, we had to wait unitl 1.30pm on a Wednesday before we could see it!!!

Ended up buying loads of videos!!

However don't worry obsession will soon change to other age related crazes. In DS1's case it was

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Kamakotchi (that blinkin' stupid pet thing you had to keeep alive)
Eating
Not washing
The Matrix

and then the worst.........

Thomas hat
Thomas scarf
Thomas gloves (and mittens)
Thomas coat
Thomas duvet set
Thomas pyjamas
Thomas rucksack
Thomas umbrella
Thomas t-shirts
Thomas socks
Thomas tracks (collection still growing)
Thomas books/comics (collection growing even faster)
Thomas colouring books/pencils/crayons (I've lost count)

DS likes Thomas, can you tell? The only thing he likes as much as Thomas is Winnie the Pooh and all his friends, especially Tigger. And when we go to the supermarket he can spot a Thomas or Pooh character at the other end of the aisle even when it's the tiniest of tiny figures on a box of toothpaste or something!

DS was into Thomas at that age and I thought he had grown out of it. But due to DD and DNephew being into it he has gone back to it all (he is 5) and is forever building complex wooden tracks around the bedroom or dining room and arguing with DD over who has which train. He is no longer into the accessories (cup/lunchbox/pjs etc) - not so cool when you are nearly 6, but the trains are still a big hit.
