What age did your toddler start to run properly?

DD is 2.5, and is hitting all normal developmental milestones. She took her first independent steps just before she turned one, is a climber, and has no obvious balance problems. But she is not yet running properly. She can walk for hours, but only very slowly, and if motivated by a game she can speed up to a slight trot, but definitely not a proper run.

She had some problems at birth so we have to keep an eye on her development. While all seems completely normal so far, I'm wondering if this is something we need to flag up, or if most 2.5 year olds can't run? I can't help noticing at our playgroups that plenty of kids her age and younger are actually running properly.

So when did your toddlers run properly?

I am sure mine weren't exactly running at that age either...walking and a bit of a trot yes....I have two DDs. My friend has a DD who is 2 and 3 months and she is not running either...in fact she is only just these last 3 months walking reliably!...She was a bit slow to walk....my friend's not worried and neither is the health visitor....and I must say I never even thought about it but then you're perhaps more watchful because of the problems at birth.

My DS1 is 2.5yo and can run fairly quickly but it's not a smooth run - he wiggles in the middle a bit and and doesn't really look ahead etc. it looks a bit like someone imitating a "girly run" if you know what I mean.

Thanks for replying - it sounds like we don't need to worry just yet, I'll give her a few more months before panicking smile.
