How to deal with stonewalling

DS had started reception this year at a school where the majority of children went to nursery together. He made great efforts to fit in and to make friends. One boy was very charming and they had a couple of play dates but this week he began stonewalling my son and me for a good measure. By stonewalling I mean not making eye contact, not answering greetings, looking through you etc. No explanation given and my son can't think of anything he did during school day to cause it. As he ignores my son DS can't find out what's wrong. I told DS to back off and stop engaging with him apart from polite hello and bye-bye. What am I wondering is whether there is anything else I should do or tell my son to do?

You could have a quiet word with their teacher to see if anything's happened in school? If there's no obvious reason, then I think your advice is good - to leave the other boy in peace for a while as he's not interested in being friendly at the moment - and focus on other friendships for the time being.

Thank you. I am just panicking a bit because at DS's school kids are a lot more sophisticated with their put downs than at his nursery. There is not a lot of it but it's not the quantity but quality that worries me.
