Not responding to name.

My daughter is 21 months old. I posted a few months ago with my concerns, I thought she was maybe on the spectrum. Since then her communication has exploded. She points to everything and now has just under 30 words since she said her first one in June. She waves when she sees people with no prompting and says ta ta when they leave.

She asks for things by pointing and saying a word. She's also said two word sentences and sometimes three.

What concerns me now is that this week it seems she no longer responds to her name as consistently as before. She's usually doing something so I'm not sure if she's just choosing to ignore me. More often than not if I give an instruction with it she comes running.

She is teething at the moment and these ones are taking forever to come through.

Is anyone else's toddler like this also?

She sounds like she is doing really well! Its been a while since I had a toddler, but it does sound like there could be an element of her starting to develop independence, and choosing to ignore you. If you are concerned though, it might be worth speaking to your health visitor to put your mind at rest.

Oh I think I remember you. Glad she's now coming on. Judging by my children she's engrossed and either doesn't register or has realised she can ignore you. Get used to it, she'll be a teenager one day. GrinGrin

Oh, I remember you too. Great that your Dd has made so much progress.

not sure if not responding to name in isolation is a concern. Do you still have other worries?

Maybe look at the M-chat (again) and see if it still flags up anything.

No other concerns which is why I'm not sure if it's anything to worry about. In the last five minutes we've had two new words!

The m-chat score is still one.

Mine is hit and miss (also 21m) it's because he's starting to learn that these things are optional they're bloody not but it's taking effort to teach him that and is getting more independent.

Have you spoken to your GP or HV about your concerns? Because from what you've put you're rather more concerned about certain things than the majority of parents

I spoke to the HV a few months ago and was told there was a speech, language and communication delay. She's come along leaps and bounds, I'm so proud. It's just the selective hearing, so frustrating! She responds if there's a promise of food!

My DS has been doing this too. When it suits he will hear and respond, otherwise no chance! Shock

As she has previously responded well, I'm not sure it's cause for concern alone.

My 3yo and 5yo don't often respond to their names anymore. However if I whisper "chocolate" they will come storming from the other end of the house.

Perhaps she is busy playing/engaged with something and is simply ignoring you because she prefers to carry on with her fun rather than listening.

It's something they all go through (ignoring their parents) but you could get her checked out.

Sounds totally normal. My 2 boys often need me to say their names 4 or 5 times before I get a response if they're busy playing. I'm always shouting 'did you hear me!'

She is preoccupied. Stop worrying. Do you go to mum and toddler groups. You will see how different all the tots development is.
