14mo DS stopped growing in pregnancy and was born full term at 5lbs 4oz, they didnt measure how long he was but he was pretty teeny and seems to be following the 2nd centile for height, he is 29inches now and I was wondering does anyone else have a child on 2nd centile (any age) and do they look noticeably small compared to average kids? im only 4ft 11 so went all through school getting teased and I get alot of comments now I hate it! but his dad is 6ft 2.. but doesn't look like he's going to be tall. does anyone know what the male adult height for 2nd centile is also? thanks

Well they're all unique individuals & centiles are based on thousands of averages

But I have 2 DDs - DD1 was about 5th centile growing up (weighed 5-11 at birth, & I'm 6') & DD2, 3 years younger, was 75th

Growing up they were very close in height despite the age difference, & DD2 stopped growing much earlier than DD1, but they've ended up almost exactly the same height - 5'7. DD1 was predicted to be barely 5'!

So try not to worry too much Smile

DS was born 10 weeks prem, weighing 2 lb 5 oz. He is now 2 yo actual age, (22 months corrected age) and still below 3rd centile for height in both cases. Doctors have said don't worry, genes will determine his final height and we won't get an indication of that until about 6 yo. DH and I are about average height.

I actually think there are a lot of positives in having a 'small' toddler - much easier to pick up/carry, don't grow out of clothes so fast, can't reach quite so much stuff on tables/shelves, smaller nappies are cheaper (!). Also think it helps their gross motor skills like walking because they tend to be better balanced than larger children of the same age.

My DD is below the 0.4th centile for height. At 3.5yr she's a head shorter than her peers but otherwise looks in proportion. I only have the centile charts for girls in her red book but she's predicted to be 5ft-ish as an adult.
There are benefits as someone else said - we get amazing wear out of clothes - but I worry about her when she gets older and can't go on rides that have minimum height restrictions or other activities she can't join in with. Luckily M&S do school uniform in a size 2-3 so at least I won't be making it!

My dd was on the 2nd centile at birth and was the smallest in her year at primary school. Her and dd2, who is 4 years younger, wore the same size clothes and shoes up until recently.

From starting high school in September, she has shot up. I was checking the WHO height charts this week and she's now on the 75th centile. I always thought she would be small because she is very petite, I was wrong!

DD has just turned 5 and is on the 0.4th centile.

She is noticeably smaller than all her peers and although she's just finished Reception, she is noticeably smaller than all the children who are just coming into Reception.

She does notice (although no-one else says anything - they just call her cute) and wishes she was tall like her friends but it doesn't seem to bother her on a daily basis.

We are going to an adventure park on Saturday and I already know that all her friends will be able to go on things that she can't. I'm not looking forward to that Sad.

Having said that, when I started Secondary school I was the smallest child in the school. By the time I reached 16 I was one of the tallest. I'm 5ft 8 now.

I'm hoping that DD will be the same but two of her aunties on DH's side are only 5ft and her paternal GM was only 4ft 11. So I worry that she will be the same.

She has a friend though, a little boy, who is the same height (although not in the same school) and his brother who is only just 3 is taller, he is definitely finding it harder, or so it seems. But he's GORGEOUS and I am sure that he will be fine. But it's tough for them at this age...

Re the short relati

Oops
Fat fingers
Re short relations on both sides, KEGirl - my paternal GM (DD1's GGM) was under 5'
& my MIL (DD1's GM) used to be barely 5' & is now even smaller at 91
So DD1's below-10th childhood height seemed even more likely to mean she would remain very short. She didn't though! (Although all the cousins on my mother's side are tall)
I was on the short side of average up to 13 - then shot up & was 6' by 18. Girls in my year who were really tall - eg 5'7 - at 11 generally stopped growing.
Agree completely about how economical tiny children are. One pair of DD1's shoes lasted over a year when she was around 4! Grin

My daughter is almost 12 and between the 2nd and 9th centiles (might have changed since then in the red book) and she is noticably smaller than her friends, I'm 5'3 and her dads 5'9,
I don't think it's too much to worry about as long as they generally stay in the same centiles, after all some kids have to be there otherwise we'd all be the same :)
Pluses are clothes last longer, it's cheaper to get into places, she's been 2 and 3 when she's actually been 5 it saves a fortune, I didn't pay even bus fare til she was 8 lol
She did get picked up a lot when she was little by the older kids as she was cute and it's slightly worrying when she goes to high school next year as she gets pushed around in the halls as it is but it never seems to bother her much, someone's got to be the smallest!
